Hi there,
I have a desktop at home which is a Pentium 4 box with 1 GB of RAM that had been crunching happily for almost 2 years now, but close to Xmas I had a disk failure and lost all the data on it. As a result, I had to buy a new hard disk and install operating system all over again. I have finished doing it this week, and installed BOINC 6.4.2 on it, the latest version. Now when I run BOINC, it says that I have two CPUs on my desktop and it is processing two tasks at the same time! How come? My Pentium 4 CPU is one of the firsts released, before those Dual Cores/CoreDuos we have around these days... Also, before the crash, the installed BOINC said I had only 1 processor... Any clues? I'm running XP with SP3 now. |

What speed is it? If it is 3.0 or greater then it probably has hyperthreading. This may have been disabled in your previous OS install and the reinstall would have reenabled it by default. Hyperthreading is a trick to get more performance out of certain intel processors, it makes the OS think there are twice as many CPUs and typically gets a gain of about 20% in total thouroughput.

You are right, it´s 3.0 GHz. That should be it, I´ll check about the HT settings...

Hello Flavio Bessa,
Your Pentium 4 uses hyperthreading to present the appearance of 2 computers to the operating system. You have enough memory to run 2 threads without any problems. Of course, though total throughput is slightly higher this way, each individual result will take almost twice as long. If this bothers you, you can use Advanced - Preferences in BOINC Manager to set local preferences for that machine to run only 1 thread (50%) on that computer. Lawrence |
