Hi,
----------------------------------------I activated the "Participate in Beta Testing" option on all four device profiles (default, home, school, work) about three month ago. So far, I did not get even a single Beta work unit. Is it just "bad luck"? Are there only very very few work units out there? Or am I making any mistake? If it helps: I use different processor technologies (Pentium 4, Core 2 Duo, Xeon Quad Core) and run different operating systems (MacOS 10.5.6, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 2008 Server, Ubuntu Linux). Thanks for your feedback! ![]() |

Beta testing is intermittent. You just have to watch the beta testing forums for announcements and hope you get lucky. Also, if you have a large cache of workunits waiting to run then that decreases your chance of snagging a beta job when they do get sent out. The techs want machines with fast turn around times.

Hello Cyberacid,
First off, there are very few Beta work units. The results are carefully checked by our limited staff, so they have to keep the number issued very low compared with the number of members. Secondly, Beta units only go to computers that are listed as having fast turn around. This is the 'reliable' list. These computers normally have very small caches (0.1 days is a reasonable size) so a work unit is normally returned quickly after being sent. In the last 3 months, I know I have gotten one (1) Beta unit. I might have received a second one, but certainly not more than that. Beta units are unusual enough to be classified as rare, which is why I still do not have a badge for it. Lawrence |

Hi joneill003,
----------------------------------------that was one of my thoughts too. So since the Clean Energy project started (according to the forum a lot of beta testing was going om) I tried the following: - Limited cache size to half a day - emptied the cache on the Quad-Xeon 2.4GHz machine (only WCG active on this machine) - deactivated all project participation beside Clean Energy project and beta testing Even with that setup I could not get a beta unit. Only some regular CEP wor units from time to time when they were distributing. Maybe really just bad luck ... ![]() |

Thanks for your replies! I keep trying :-) ![]() |

There is also a limited window of time when the betas are sent out.
----------------------------------------My guess based on what I saw with the betas that were sent out a couple of days ago was all the beta units were sent out in about an hour. So if your system did not just happen to check in for new work during that time you missed out. -Jasm

As we continue to grow, many folks continue to sign up for beta. As a result when we start a beta test we often send out all the work for the beta test in only an hour or so. Thus if your client doesn't fetch work during that period, you will not get beta work.
We may be increasing the size of our beta tests as a result of the issues we have experienced with The Clean Energy Project. In the past, issues have been largely a function of the research application itself. I.e. it would behave consistently across different workunits. The Clean Energy Project is showing different behavior with different workunits. This will necessitate larger beta tests in the future. |
