Sekarob,
----------------------------------------It was not left in memory after swapping. And I don't like to increase switching time. It's at 120 minutes and it will stay there. Boinc is made for various projects to run in sequence, they just can't all have their own demands apart from general system requirements. I understand it potentially might decrease the chance of errors, but it's still no guarantee. I might as well set it to 30 or 100 hours, then it wouldn't switch or stop at all, apart from reboots. The guarantee can be given by adjusting the app I think, but it must be on the priority list and within the capabilities of the dev-team. If not, than this project is unfortunately not for me. That's life, not everybody can be made happy all the time and this time I might be the unlucky one. I won't cry over it. Still Kevin was looking into it and I'm willing to help him dissect the problem. When he says there's nothing that can or will be done about it, then I have to stop crunching HPF2, but were not there yet. Thanks for your advice anyway, Bart [Edit 1 times, last edit by dividedbymyself at Feb 10, 2009 1:45:29 PM] |

Bart,
----------------------------------------There are all sorts of considerations for multi project crunchers. Resource share, the number of projects, deadlines (which BOINC will manage automatically). However we look at it, at the end of the week they'll all have their allotment. I'm not really interested how it falls on a daily basis... some crunchers very concentrated on RAC, which is a 60 day running mean anyhow. Sekerob

Sekerob,
Most projects I crunch don't give many problems or errors. I do crunch some alpha or beta projects, but then I know in advance they can give problems, still then I also hope they will be addressed. If not, then I abandon them, but that only happens on rare occasions. And I don't care about credits at all. I don't understand why people have emotional ties to "virtual cobblestones". I want to contribute to scientific progress, that's all and I'd be Boincing as well if there was no credit system at all. Still the efficiency plays an important role. If I produce errors that can't be resolved, than my cpu cycles and money spent on energy is useless and I need to rethink my strategy on how to support science. Bart |

Kevin,
I returned another Wu yesterday, which was validated as "valid". When it was half an hour before it finished I suspended it so it had enough time to finish without prematurely stopping on the last checkpoint and I was interested how it would end if it had time enough to finish during normal run time. I could do this because I was more or less around by accident, but next time I might not be able to keep an eye on it. The next Wu's I will let end normally again to see what happens. When they go wrong I'll report them here so maybe you could check the results to enable you to find out what went wrong with them. Bart |

Not sure, but interpreting the developers check in notes, a future 6.6 release might have the fix, essentially forcing an artificial High Priority condition to get it to finish.

Sekerob,
Thanks for the info. Good to know they're working on it. Quite a brute-force method, not a very elegant one anyway, but as long as it works, it works. I suppose there's just no other way... Do you know if there's a page on this site to check the latest applications, like on most Boinc-sites? Or is such a thing non-existent over here? I've never been able to find it. I can see the current version in my Boinc client, but in case I decide to temporary stop because of too many errors (not yet the case) I'd like to keep an eye on newer versions to know when to give it a try again. The Matrix FAQ in the Start Here forum has that information. There's another FAQ there specifically listing the project versions and release dates.

Yet another invalid result (a double "called boinc_finish" again). I think I better suspend HPF2 and wait for a new app. version. I hope that will be soon, I'll be happy to give it a try.

I'm about to test 6.6.10 alpha to see if it makes a difference. Both in unprivileged and privileged (protected) install. I certainly like the seemingly better and more tolerant GUI to Core client remote control stability.
----------------------------------------There won't be a new app version unless it can be pinned down. Presuming it's another of the 100% break events, I'll see if the 6.6.10 test brings any improvement on Vista et al.
