Hi,
I am running my BOINC client software on Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition (all latest patches installed) and I have just updated BOINC to version 6.4.5 for windows_intelx86. My computer (Dell 4700) runs 24/7. This is my second update performed on this software and each time BOINC tells me that my current unfinshed work from the previous version has to be aborted/detached for the reason of being way overdue - please see the messages: 1/18/2009 5:15:40 PM|World Community Grid|Task X0000052400087200507071744_0 is 75.73 days overdue. 1/18/2009 5:15:40 PM|World Community Grid|You may not get credit for it. Consider aborting it. 1/18/2009 5:15:40 PM|World Community Grid|Task ma313_00025_6 is 67.36 days overdue. 1/18/2009 5:15:40 PM|World Community Grid|You may not get credit for it. Consider aborting it. The two above tasks were downloaded for processing today! I run the same update on my other WinXP computers and everything looks good (no lost work). I wonder if there is a work around or maybe the installation process on Win Server 2003 is not as simple (download and run) as it appears to be on WinXP? Thanks, Janusz Sado |

Hello SOS_Ready,
When are the work units due? Is your date correct on the server? Of everything looks good, then go ahead and run them. Otherwise, abort the work units. Lawrence |

Hi, SOS_Ready.
First, we do not recommend BOINC 6.4.5. There is no reason for you to risk it. Second, you will have to give us your complete logs if you want us to understand what is going on. Please post the contents of your stdoutdae.txt file (you will find it in your BOINC data directory). Thank you. |

Hi all -
Thank you for such a prompt reply! The reason for updating to BOINC v6.4.5 was a simple curiosity to see a combo GPU/CPU working (mor or less) in concert while crunching some parallel-ready (non WCG) projects. BOINC claims that v6.4.5 has all it takes to do so by using NVIDIA/CUDA enabled graphis cards on WinXP or VISTA. My intention was to update only my XP machines but the "forces of inertia" caused Win Server 2003 update as well. Please note that my first installation of BOINC v5.10.45 went to: 26-Sep-2008 00:29:25 [---] Data directory: D:\BOINC and my update (v6.4.5) went to: 18-Jan-2009 17:15:39 [---] Data directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC I have two physical SATA drives "C" and "D". Maybe this confused installer (just uneducated guess)?? Below is the partial contents of my stdoutdae.txt file (the whole file is to big to be posted - do forgive my ignorance please but I could not find any option to attach this file): 26-Sep-2008 00:29:25 [---] Starting BOINC client version 5.10.45 for windows_intelx86 26-Sep-2008 00:29:25 [---] log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 26-Sep-2008 00:29:25 [---] Libraries: libcurl/7.18.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8e zlib/1.2.3 26-Sep-2008 00:29:25 [---] Data directory: D:\BOINC 26-Sep-2008 00:29:25 [---] Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz [x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 1] 26-Sep-2008 00:29:25 [---] Processor features: fpu tsc pae nx sse sse2 mmx 26-Sep-2008 00:29:25 [---] OS: Microsoft Windows Server 2003: Standard Server Edition, Service Pack 2, (05.02.3790.00) 26-Sep-2008 00:29:25 [---] Memory: 2.49 GB physical, 3.08 GB virtual 26-Sep-2008 00:29:25 [---] Disk: 298.08 GB total, 286.63 GB free 26-Sep-2008 00:29:25 [---] Local time is UTC -4 hours 26-Sep-2008 00:29:25 [---] No general preferences found - using BOINC defaults 26-Sep-2008 00:29:25 [---] Preferences limit memory usage when active to 1275.02MB 26-Sep-2008 00:29:25 [---] Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 2295.04MB 26-Sep-2008 00:29:25 [---] Preferences limit disk usage to 9.31GB 26-Sep-2008 00:29:25 [---] This computer is not attached to any projects 26-Sep-2008 00:29:25 [---] Visit http://boinc.berkeley.edu for instructions 26-Sep-2008 00:29:28 [---] Running CPU benchmarks 26-Sep-2008 00:29:28 [---] Suspending computation - running CPU benchmarks 26-Sep-2008 00:29:35 [http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/] Master file download succeeded 26-Sep-2008 00:29:40 [http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/] Sending scheduler request: Project initialization. The installer copies the data from your old data directory. Sometimes reading a message log is difficult, but in this case, it's perfectly straightforward. You downloaded the tasks in October, then did nothing with them until you upgraded in January.

As I indicated in my previous post that what you see is the partial contents of my stdoutdae.txt file (the whole file is too big to be posted - WCG gives me some SQL error when trying to do so) and I do not see any option to attach this file. This is the reason why I included only "date breakpoints activity" related to the installation/update of BOINC. My Win Server 2003 (device Dell4700) joined WCG on 09/26/2008 and till now (almost 4 months) it returned 237 results. My other XP machines joined WCG on 09/23/2208 and returned 766 results (4 months). I can provide "Device Statistics" images to verify the above. My computers work 24/7 and each day has WCG related work documented. So for you to say "You downloaded the tasks in October, then did nothing with them until you upgraded in January" in such authoritative way is simply a little bit unfair. I understand that today's people are tired and may not have time or the patience to read all the details - if that is the case then it would be better not to reply at all than to reply in such a shallow eureka manner.

Consider aborting it. Same tasks, you see? There are a number of possible causes that may interfere with the progress made by a task - but these are two tasks from different projects, and there is a gap in the logs where I would expect to see it if you had simply not been running BOINC. I'm a firm believer in Occam's Razor. If you want to edit logs half way through, then you should mark the edit, otherwise we have no clue what you did and will base our judgement on faulty data. Yes, I saw your "partial" comment, but I'm afraid I assumed you had simply truncated the log, not chopped it up. This site doesn't support attachments. If you aren't confident in editing the log file, then paste the entire file to a service such as http://pastebin.ca/ |
