I'm assuming it's been considered about whether to allow additional projects to fill in for paused/waiting projects. Not giving them permanent status but allowing them to process some data when time is available. There would be no badges unless they became permanent of course or would have a different point/badging setup.
You know all of those projects that get turned down for not having enough resource time to share. Or is that being handled by having N projects and hoping most of the crunchers will allow their machines to process other projects they wouldn't normally work on? Personally I go back to SIMAP/Rosetta when the projects I have chosen are out of work units. ![]() Please forgive me if this has been mentioned before. I searched this forum but got back 12 pages of posts with no highlighting to tell me if they were even close to what I was looking for. ![]() Thanks |

Hello faldor!
----------------------------------------WCG is not turning down any project for not having enough resource time to share. WCG's "problem" is not to manage some waiting list of projects, it is to find more projects to launch. Submitting a project and launching it is a big work and WCG does not find such candidates as easily as you seem to think. And once a project has been launched and when its teething problems have been eliminated it is a full time project as others. It may happen that a project has particular temporary problems which make it be paused (like DDDT currently) or slowed down (like Rice). It may also happen that another project needs some particular results faster than usual (like FAAH sometimes). All these cases are managed through parameters of the servers that the techs can modify to distribute more of one or less of another to all members who are "multi-pojects" and/or who have checked the famous box "If there is no work available...send me work from the other projects". There is no part time project and no need for one. And by the way, why would a part time project would be supposed to be more attractive than the current projects that you don't wish to crunch nowadays while you are waiting for your preferred one? Regarding resources to share you may feel comfortable: current plans are for having 10 concurrent projects (i.e. four more than today) to offer next Summer, and WCG is still searching for new candidates. Cheers. Jean. |

Thanks for all the info. :)
To answer the question why a part-time might be more attractive... I just have a preference of the types of research that I contribute time to. I like dealing with more solvable problems. Many of the cancer/AIDS research projects are a bit vague on their intent or have resulting data that doesn't seem to lead very far. For instance AIDS is one of many that constantly changes and has to be attacked differently each time. Cancer is very vague unless you're talking about a specific type of cancer that is caused by a specific thing. Just my $0.02 worth. Obviously everyone here has their own reasons for contributing time from their machines. Thanks, Faldor |

Jean, thanks for the 'heads up' with regards to the plan to have 10 concurrent projects in the 'not too distant future'.
----------------------------------------More projects should hopefully bring in more people offering their machines to crunch, as well as more badges ![]() ![]() |
