WUs are extremely long.

Above screen shot is from my C2Q Q6600 machine with 4GB DDR2 RAM & Vista Premium. The WUs have been taking longer and longer to run of late, and I have had the following 5 WUs show as 'No reply' that were due on 08/01/09.

E000087_986A_000g52002
E000087_971A_000g5100t
E000087_979A_000g51011
E000087_945A_000g51003
E000087_944A_000g51002

I don't mind a lengthy WU now and then but, this appears to be getting a little out of hand. Is there a valid reason for this happening?

Well done with the server changeover.

Re the above post. Messages were wiped at server changeover but this is what they now show.

Re: WUs are extremely long.

The long WUs of this project and the big differences from one batch (molecule) to another have been already discussed in several threads of the CEP forum. The scientists will do their best to reduce both inconveniences as much as they can, but I am afraid it is the nature of the work done and there will always be longer WUs and shorter ones even if/when the effects are better controlled.

In the long list you show only the first active task (E000071...) is really long for a Q6600, but its completion time was probably close to the truth.
For the first two E000075 ones their completion time has not been reduced enough from their initial overestimated value. I think they should not last longer than 15 hours each.
For the last active task, it has not run enough for me to give you an estimate from this static view. But since it is another E000075 WU it will probably need around 15 hours as the other two.

It is very annoying that these CEP WUs have so much different and hard-to-predict durations because it makes Boinc unable to correctly estimate completion times and that disturbs its requests for extra work. Also, maybe you have asked for too many days of extra work at the beginning?

If you want and have time to keep an eye on what happens you might use this post How long will this new type-A Clean Energy Project (CEP) work unit (WU) last? to estimate how long a given CEP WU will last, once it has run for some time.

Regarding your E000087 WUs in "No reply" status you have probably been the first one to return them (otherwise they would show "Too late" or even "Valid") and thus they will probably be handled normally once an other one will have come back. And also, the techs will probably have a particular attention for WUs which were due while the site was closed.

Last point: at least you will not be one of those members who are desperately waiting for getting some of these still-rare WUs. smile

And thank you for the (deserved) kind words for the techs. Jean.

Re: WUs are extremely long.

I have the same problems. One WU is running 1 to 2 days. The total time giving for finishing one WU is also not very much. Other projects gives more time...and also more points. The relations are not right.
I will stop working on this project until this problem is fixed.

Regards

Re: WUs are extremely long.

Jim, thanks for the reply. I currently have a WU that has already run for more than 49 hours with a further 5.75 hours still shown to completion. I'll just have to grin and bear it, I guess.

Re: WUs are extremely long.

Muckebadscher, sorry to learn of your problem with long WUs. However, the number of points gained is not of vital importance, the number of completed WUs returned is. So long as your PC is managing to complete and return WU, long or otherwise, please reconsider running WUs for this project. Good luck to you.

********

I too have noticed that the work credit in this proejct does not equal the actaul amount of work as would have been generated in other projects however I have not abandoned the project as so far I haven't been able to trade even one of my almost six millions points for even one slice of pizza and maybe half a beer.

That's the smart thing to do. This project has so many problems WCG should just kill it until the problems are resolved and then try it in Beta again before turning it loose on everyone.

The Clean Energy Project? The Energy Wasting Project would be a more appropriate title! frustrated

Re: WUs are extremely long.

Just tell us what all these problems are. I've just loaded 2 and they run without a hitch. One running 10 times as long as the other which is now 47% of 3.5 hours. Not noticing anything on this 2gb 1.8 ghz clunker. Not even warming up.

PS: That post looks suspiciously identical to another one shared recently.

Just read through this forum: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/listthreads?forum=341 and you'll see numerous threads about numerous problems. (But then you already knew that, didn't you?)
