Re: WCG on a School Campus

School campuses are definitely good candiates for distributed computing like WCG, although the computers can be several years old, and they would work mostly only during the night. Currently, most computers still have a copy of Windows.
Maybe WCG should communicate more through IT magazines (both Linux-oriented and Windows-oriented ones, I know of LinuxWorld) and Internet information sources (Newsforge, Slashdot, etc.) the IT folks read ?

Re: WCG on a School Campus

Thanks for the comments. Our experience with printed media has been mixed. I think that the concept of World Community Grid make good news and media like to print it. However, readers can't link to the site when they are reading about it on paper and then forget about it. Our next media event is later this month in conjuction with a symposium conduction by ISB who is running the Human Proteome Folding project on World Community Grid. http://systemsbiology.org/

The web media outlets are a better bet. We had a great experience with Slashdot. We can't contact Newsforge until later this year when we have a linux client. Are there any other online media outlets?

Re: WCG on a School Campus

I was wondering what ever came about from this discussion. We have been using Deep Freeze for 2 years now and have also been asked to look into putting WCG on our 1000 machines.

We can not do without Deep Freeze. It does allow us to exempt an area of the drive, which seems to have been part of the original question. Our machines do not reboot just at night, but each time a student logs off. They also go into a 2-3 hour maintenance period at night.

Also, how well does this program go through the ghosting process. We ghost at least once a semester and I'm wondering how the device name will be handled.

Thank you for your time,

Paul --

I don't think this ever was resolved. I have asked the project manager of the WCG Project to jump in here or have one of his folks do so to assist you. With that many systems involved, you should get the best advice we can give.

Best regards,
