I'm considering upgrading my primary computer to Windows 7. How does BOINC take it?

Windows 7 is an incremental release, so there should be no significant compatibility issues.
But do let us know how you get on. |

I'm considering upgrading my primary computer to Windows 7. How does BOINC take it? W7 isn't even in Beta yet. The only way to get it is to Torrent a copy. Its a little early to be worried about it, isn't it. The Techs don't even have a copy to test. Patience, please. |

Windows 7 is an incremental release, so there should be no significant compatibility issues. But do let us know how you get on. Very good. I just worry because of the absolute #@!! I had to go through to get it working properly on a Vista SP1 machine recently. W7 isn't even in Beta yet. The only way to get it is to Torrent a copy. Its a little early to be worried about it, isn't it. The Techs don't even have a copy to test. Patience, please. We won't delve into how I got a copy (although I am using the beta for what it is intended for). I'm just excited because this machine, now that I have Windows7 on it, feels a bit snappier, and I'm eager to take advantage of the freed CPU cycles. But do let us know how you get on. Here's where it is so far. PC: Compaq Presario SR1710NX RAM: 1.00 GB HDD: 86 GB Free (93 GB Total) Graphics: ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 Series Total VRAM: 287 MB Dedicated VRAM: 64 MB Network Adapter: Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter Operating System: Windows7 (6.1.7000) for x86 (32-bit) OS was correct-ish-ly detected by website. Given proper installer. Installer ran correctly. (I installed as service, giving all users control over BOINC.) After reboot, attempted to attach to project. Gave generic error. Tried to manually attach. Attached with no issues. Is now running fine. By looking at the Task Manager, it seems to be using less RAM (but I've never done WUs for Rice before) but is actually taking advantage of more of the CPU time. Previously, the percentage used would vary between 30% or so and 100%. Still no perceivable lag on other applications. I'm unsure what the initial issue is. I can't recreate it. But, the setup was relatively smooth on the whole. I'll post again when and if the work is validated by another (likely officially supported) machine. |

That first WU went through well. At this point, I don't foresee any changes necessary for Windows 7 specifically. BOINC support of Vista has always needed some polish, and that continues to be the case for 7, but any issues with 7 seem to be the same as Vista, thus any fixes for Vista should apply to 7.

The techs have kind of a mountain of other priorities, right now.
And I thought they were overworked before! |

............ The Techs don't even have a copy to test. Patience, please. How do you know? Actually, Windows 7 Beta 1 (aka build 7000) specifically exists for that purpose. |

W7 isn't even in Beta yet. The only way to get it is to Torrent a copy. It's not true once Beta's are being shared and sent in the last months exclusively for SME's heavy users to evaluate and help debugs with feedbacks (Subject Matter Expert). Anyway, I remember last year read in a specilalized paper about some importants porting works that IBM World Wide Research & Technical team had done for years with MS Research & technical team to find specific solutions and solve problems to port IBM Hw and Sw solutions to MS technologies and remember that there are a lot of people from IBM allocated on that with full acess to MS Labs developments from MS Redmond site and MS Silicon Valley site (sametimes enemy, sametimes friends...it is just businesses between corporations...). So, I guess that probably (we will never know 100% of sure about it !) that at least few IBMer's from Tech team could picked some W7 Beta's to evaluate and test (don't know if someone from WCG team...). ![]()
