I crunch to advance the science.64 bit would help a lot in my case. No, it wouldn't. Even if you have a 64 bit machine, and the project provided 64 bit applications, the crunching would not be any faster. There are only a couple of projects that get *any* kind of speed-up with 64 bit. The projects at WCG don't. ![]() |

BTW I have 34 such clients. |

This is one of those awkward situations. Yes, a natively compiled 64-bit science application is faster.... (a little, anyway, without additional optimisation). So, from the point of view of someone with a 64 bit machine, there is no downside to 64 bit. Obviously, you want it!
But for World Community Grid, the cost of porting and maintaining all these extra platforms isn't offset by the expected advantage. Yet. One idea that has been floated is to port just one project, so that people with 64 bit computers can do a little more, and WCG don't have to make a huge commitment. This could work, but I imagine a few of our more partisan members would be unhappy. I expect WCG will only do this when they are ready to roll out all the projects (phased, obviously). |
