I'm assuming that Boinc is 32 bit based. but with the world well on the way to being 64 bits wouldn't we be able to do so much more running a 64 bit version ?
of course if a 64 bit version does exist plese point me in the right direction |

Less "more" than you would think. Given the advantage is so small, WCG don't want to double the number of releases they have to maintain. They already have dozens.

so 64 bit computing doesn't help ? I assumed it would as the folding@home project runs also on Graphic car processors and apparantly much faster, I'm assuming they are more than 32 bits due to what they do.

GPUs are often less than 32 bits.
The hype can be so confusing. ATI's famed "128 bits" is pure marketing. |

There are 64bit versions of BOINC at the BOINC download page, however as mentioned elsewere in this thread for most projects they make very little difference. Of the 100 or so BOINC projects I only know of 3 where the gain is more than 10% and WCG is not one of them. Generally the floating point unit is the same in 32bit and 64bit CPUs and most projects use this section of the CPU almost exclusively.

The BOINC "manager app" is 64 bit yes but the WU are still 32bit so no difference seen except in benchmarks. I can understand WCG not wanting to move to 64 bit as the bulk of computers in the world run 32bit OS's BUT is that the case here? I'd love to see a poll of the members showing what OS's they use. In fact that would be VERY worth doing. A stuck thread on the main page where people can post what they use. I think we and WCG might see that there are more 64bit users than any of us would suspect. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Movieman at Dec 22, 2008 8:52:36 PM] |

World Community Grid do, of course, already have this information. It is provided by the client.
----------------------------------------World Community Grid don't publish this directly, but the data is available at boincstats. 32 bit operating systems outnumber 64 bit by over two orders of magnitude. There are more 64 bit CPUs (than operating systems), but they remain vastly outnumbered. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 22, 2008 9:12:18 PM] |

If the project is serious about getting the most work done per machine a 64bit app. would only make good sense. Why hamstring the powerful machines because some don't run 64bit? Even if there are 2 to 1 32bit machines the extra work done by the 64bit computers would definitely help.

I run 13 quads with Vista 64 and Boinc 64. I run primarily HCC and I can report a definite increase in my PPD and thus, my production. On the order of 10% with HCC.
The place to get 64 bit Boinc is a click into the page Keck linked. Just select "all versions" at the bottom middle of the page. You'll find all sorts of versions there. You may wish to stick to the ones marked "recommended" since these have completed testing and are known solid. Good crunching, and Regards, Bob |

The points increase with BOINC 64 bit but the work done doesn't. Boinc is just the mamager app and the WU are 32 bit. Thats the issue. My thinking is that in WCG with the dedicated people we have here many who currently have 32 bit OS's but 64 bit capable cpu's would change to a 64 bit OS if the WU were coded for 64 bit. What I don't know is exactly how much more work would be done if a change to 64 bit capable WU was offerred. Is it 5% more or 50%? That is the important question. ![]() |
