Strange result

My WU has resulted in:

E000027_ 387A_ 00035t009_ 0-- Error 12/14/08 00:55:11 12/20/08 02:05:47 26.26 159.2 / 0.0

While yesterday afternoon the score was:

Processing time 78:55:00
Progress 84,4%
Remaining time 11:55:00

How can the final claimed time be 26.26?

The messages were:

Hope you can do something with these results.

Re: Strange result

I reckon the wu exceeded the cpu time limit so aborted. I had one do that after 76 hours. It's pretty galling to waste so much time, so I've deselected cep until their problems have been sorted.

But maybe wait until the techs give you a proper reply as to what went wrong and why it says only 26 hours.

Re: Strange result

Will one of the techs be commenting on this problem?

I've looked in the faqs for any info regarding the cpu time limit, but cannot find anything. It's mentioned in passing in the boinc faqs, but just says it's 'probably' a stuck work unit. But j.post and mine were not stuck, but just grinding a very long wu. I was just 14 hours from completion when mine aborted.....

Maybe in JmBoullier's advice about calculating how long a cep wu will last , it should say if completion time is looking like more than 70 hours (or whatever the cpu time limit actually is), then abort it asap to avoid wasting any more time?

Re: Strange result

The FAQ cannot say that because:
- the actual limit varies from one WU to another, it is coded in its parameters
- this limit is not coded in time but in number of operations
- therefore the actual time limit depends on what has been coded in the WU and on the speed of the device which runs it.

Usually the limit for one WU is 10 times what it should normally need, so it is normally much above. However, as for everything in life it happens that things are exceptionally not the way they should be. Also, with this particular project it seems so difficult to have a correct weight estimate of a WU that sometimes it can be evaluated more than 10 times too low.

Sorry about that. Jean.

Re: Strange result

Thanks for the reply, Jean. I guess I saw things too simplistically, and there's nothing simple about this clean energy project....
I see also the post in Known Issues from uplinger about the investigations into the errors/invalid results in cep, so I'll keep checking for updates.
I look forward to being able to rejoin cep.

Jean is correct about this. The limits are based on what other members have returned for the project.

CPU limits is based on the number of flops used to calculate the work unit. Which means a P2 500Mhz computer would take many days to calculate the same flops a new processor would calculate. CPU limit is not based on actual time but computations calculated.

Since the 10 times is based on previous work from other results returned the values may be improper for the CEP project. I will check to see that this value is proper enough for the CEP project.

confused Re: Strange result

Hello,
With my PCs the clean energy project progresses far slower than all other projects. I'm too confronted with rather frequent "errors" with no plausible reason.. completely on time, but "in error" nonetheless.
However still 25 results accepted for the project in a few weeks time.
Strange,

Paul

Re: Strange result

Hello vep,
There are a number of bugs in CEP that we are investigating. It will probably be some weeks before we start deploying fixes. January will be busy with the switch to the new servers.
