Varying CPU usage stats

I've just started using BOINC again now that I have a computer that can run it without crashing. I set it 30% CPU usage in the manager but I've noticed that, instead, CPU usage oscillates between 0% and 40% for both work units that are currently running. The changes happen every few seconds. My concern is that this is causing my CPU temperature to change by 10 degrees celsius every few seconds.

I'm running Vista 32 bit on an Intel T9300 Core 2 Duo. The work units come from the help conquer cancer project - both are wcg_hcc1_img_6.06_windows_intelx86.exe.

I'd suggest that the CPU utilization should be kept constant - I want it to run at 30% all the time.

Regards.

Re: Varying CPU usage stats

Me too and everybody else as well. WCG has asked the developers, many user have asked the developer, but, they seem little interested, so i recommend to set the throttle to 100% for BOINC and fetch ThreadMaster GUI which allowed to set a percent which is smooth, and different percentages for different sciences at that too. The Start Here FAQ's explains, or this wiki: http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Smooth_throttling

Re: Varying CPU usage stats

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to try ThreadMaster now and see what happens.

Regards.

Re: Varying CPU usage stats

I now have ThreadMaster GUI running successfully and keeping both work unit processes running under 10%. Thanks for the help.

Re: Varying CPU usage stats

shipman.william, the throttling isn't ideal. But the CPU temperature simply won't oscillate that much, that fast. In all the time the technique has been used, the only times it has caused a problem is when a temperature controlled fan is set too sensitive.

Re: Varying CPU usage stats

Well, Didactylos, the reported CPU temperature does change by at least that much. It may well be the fan but I have no control over that. Anyway, I've emailed Intel to see if this is even something I should worry about.

Re: Varying CPU usage stats

Intel technical support has come back to me and says that there is nothing to worry about, such temperature changes are part of the design .

As for ThreadMaster, I gave up on it. It takes too long after starting my laptop to reign in BOINC. Too long means my CPU temperature goes past 70 degrees Celsius, at which point I start to worry.

Re: Varying CPU usage stats

Is this machine a laptop or a desktop? What model?
I have seen overheating issues on laptops a few times but nothing that severe.
On the other hand if this is a desktop I would suggest you get an upgraded heatsink for the processor. Or maybe they skimped on putting in an extra case fan. I would open up the side panel on the case and make sure that the processor fan is running like it should. Maybe something is obstructing the airflow.
If you need help troubleshooting post the manufacturer of the system and the model. I've heard the people in the PC Help Forum are pretty good and would probably be able to help you out with ideas for solving computer issues.

Re: Varying CPU usage stats

Unfortunately, its a laptop - Dell Vostro 1700. I emailed Dell but never got a response. Thats why I went to Intel tech support. Out of curiosity, what temperature swings are normal on a desktop?

Re: Varying CPU usage stats

Hi there again joneill003. I checked the PC Help forum and found this thread: http://www.pchelpforum.com/processor-cpu/5773...y-laptop-temperature.html

It seems that the temperature changes are perfectly normal and I'm not the only one needlessly worrying about my CPU.

As for the 70 degrees Celsius on full load, do remember that its the middle of summer here with 30 degree plus highs. Also remember that there was little wind so not much in the way of airflow through my house.
