That would be because there may be a temporary lack of available jobs. We noticed it twice yesterday but after an hour or so all was well. This type of scenario is why Boinc has a buffer factor allowing you to download additional work before you actually need it. I am running with a 2.0 day buffer of additional work.

An even better way to handle this problem is to check the box that allows other WCG projects to run until the job queue for CEP is repopulated. (My English usage is becoming atrocious!

yes from time to time you will find out that a project runs out of work units...
----------------------------------------you can do a few things to minimize this if you are runing BOINC you can set it to maintain x days of work you could also select more projects or allow it to run another project if there is no work at that time hopefully there will always be enough work for us on every project... keep hopeing that i will see a new badge when the daily update comes its also nice hearing from the scientests themselves thanks for responding to peoples questions you dont know how much that helps us keep going ![]() ![]() |

yes from time to time you will find out that a project runs out of work units... you can do a few things to minimize this if you are runing BOINC you can set it to maintain x days of work . . . Yes, I did set that particular machine (my only PC) to fetch 10 days of work, but it never has. It gets about 3-4 days of work and stops fetching. Perhaps the program is confused about the capability of a 2 cpu machine (as opposed to the more common 2 core single cpu machine) ? As for setting it to accept other projects, I have, but I wanted to keep this one focused on the clean energy project because it's my only PC. CEP doesn't issue work units for Macs yet.. so they are working on the other ones for me. :| |

There are various additional limitations on work distribution.
For example, the servers will only issue a maximum of 10 work units at a time. Also, each host has a daily quota. If you return invalid work, the quota is reduced. Valid work resets it, up to a maximum value. This is to protect the system from "cyclers", bad hosts that download many tasks, but fail to complete them. Finally, the calculations used to determine how much work to request - well, that's a black art. Time estimation depends on so many factors. It works well in stable situations, but CEP is proving to be very unstable in terms of work unit size. The techs are working on this. From BOINC's perspective, a 2 CPU machine is indistinguishable from a 2 core machine. |

The number is not 42, but maximum 15 per fetch it is these last 6 months or more... a load reduction measure for the servers I venture to think :D

yes tellin your computer to fetch 10 days of work if you are only running WCG on boinc probaly will not happen...
----------------------------------------on a multi core or multi processer it might fail you there as well and only request a fraction of how much you want... thats normaly easly solvable by increasing the amount of work you want also projects do not nessarly like to seen too much work to 1 person at 1 time cause if you have 10 days of work and the work units take 5 hours each.. there are some work units out there and some people waiting days for your computer to return the results to validate there work. personaly i am on a always on connection and i request .5 days ... normaly i am crunching 5+ projects so i normaly end up with 3 days work of work... but right now i am participating on the christmass challange .. or whatever its called so all my machines are crunching here also i want my badge for solar :P ![]() |

OK, this gets even weirder. My machine (fixm-002-burney) had returned several results to the project. I only know this because I watched their progress and also watched as I manually updated the client when the projects were at 100% completion and then they disappeared from the active work list, no errors given... But they don't show up under my BOINC results.. not under any category..(not valid, not invalid, not in progress... nothing..) They simply aren't there!!
What gives? All the other work unit types this device crunched show up! (and no errors or invalids ever reported on this device!) |
