Reporting

How long does it take to report a finished result? I have 2 that are sitting at 100% and waiting to be reported, and I'm halfway done the next pair.

Thanks

Re: Reporting

TJ11240, here's an FAQ with the conditions when the reporting happens:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=16783

We prefer you not to hit the Update button due server loads. The work will upload latest when the next task is being fetched and surely no later than 24 hours after completion, when network is up.

ciao

Re: Reporting

if you are runing BOINC you can select how often your computer connects to the internet and you can manualy if you want connect it to upload some work

most of the time i let BOINC decide when to upload/download...

but i also run a laptop computer as one of my computers so i normaly force it to update prior to shuting down its wireless for a time

its probaly better if you let BOINC do the times but again its your computer and your time if ya want to then you can force it to update as soon as a job is completed by doing it manualy.. it just may cause some overhead at WCG or other BOINC projects..

Re: Reporting

240,000 times per day "some overhead" is "allot" of overhead ! The Scheduler is a complex piece of machinery and the one at WCG juggles 6 projects+beta on 3 major platforms. By allowing BOINC to combine a work request with a RtR the hit on that Scheduler for that transaction is halved.. the more jobs reported in one transaction the better. This is one of the reasons why the tasks are made bigger than WCG really likes them to be. LOADS.

Thanks for not hitting update.

Re: Reporting

If update is such a problem....and a definite no-no then it should NOT be there! If it is there then it is ok to use it, if it is not ok to use it then it should not be there.

Re: Reporting

It's there for when you need it.

We like to discourage people from using it routinely, or hammering on the "Update" button dozens of times in a row. Reporting tasks immediately is rarely needed, and if everybody did it, the servers would slow to a crawl.

nasher's example of updating before disconnecting from the network is a good one. Another would be after updating your web preferences.

Re: Reporting

Why? Who said it's a definitive No No? It's there to force communication and open a line for 5 minutes, even when the network setting is set to "network suspend" or to refresh after a network issue.

Ideally volunteers should just run simple view, which has no such button... which is why WCG designed that interface.

Remember, BOINC is a one size fits all, open source. It has a few dissonant bells "in case of".

Re: Reporting

never use simple view.. i like seeing how things work

yes if i change prefrences i will hit the report button as well love struck

sometimes i will hit report on my computers an hour before a stats update on WCG (normaly the morning one for me) that way my stats get updated and hopefully i get a badge.. or so that my points count for today on the chalange... or that my BOINCSTATS get updated when it dose its update.

the button is there for use when you need it... yes some of us "NEED" it alot more than we probaly should

the point is there are 417,558 registered members for WCG and if they all started hitting the force update multiple times a day then yes WCG would slow down...

its kinda like a D.O.S. attack but unintentional

smile Re: Reporting

I usually hit the update button when I see that a unit is complete, but I can see how this would put too much load on the servers. I will stop doing that starting today! :)
