One way that the 'super crunchers' could help out the 'lesser crunchers', is, when they've got the holy grail of a Gold Beta badge, is to selflessly uncheck the box - and thus, allow the many, many others who ARE seeking Beta work a bigger chance...
----------------------------------------I, myself, will be seeking Beta work wherever possible in the 'not too distant future', although not yet. First though, I'd like to get my 'badge count' up to my likely highest level (Gold) before I reconfigure my settings so as to increase my chances of this type of work. ![]() |

That would not free many beta WUs, because I do not think that there are many Gold Beta badges. You know how difficult it is to get enough for a Bronze badge (14 days of runtime). And a Gold one is 90 days. More than 6 times more.
----------------------------------------The main problem of Apple TV is that his machines are Macs. And there are much less beta WUs for Mac and Linux than for Windows. Because, as you can see right now for CEP, application debugging is done on Windows WUs. When it comes to Linux and Mac, beta WUs are essentially for testing the port to these specific platforms. And it is usually less troublesome than application debugging itself. Cheers. Jean. |

our friend 'uplinger' ![]() Our friend uplinger is the last person who will give up beta testing, because it is his job to test new projects or later modifications to them! ![]() This also explains how easily he could get this famous Gold Beta Badge. Cheers. Jean. |

I don't consider myself a "super cruncher" but I do have several different configurations of computers to crunch on. I run the Beta tests to try to help assure that a project is bug free when it is released. No other reason. I figure that with the wide variety of machines that I have I may be able to help the WCG Techs catch a problem in Beta testing so a bunch of crunching time isn't wasted after the project is released. I expect errors when running Beta tests. That's OK as long as it helps in the long run then that time isn't wasted. Which computer(s) would you have me stop running Betas on? Are you going to step in and fill the void with an identical machine? 1) 3.4GHz P4 with HT (not overclocked), 1.5GB RAM, Windows XP Home 2) Q6700 (not overclocked), 3GB RAM, Vista Ultimate 32 bit 3) QX6700 @ 3.6GHz (overclocked), 4GB RAM, XP Pro 32 bit 4) Q6700 @ 3.65GHz (overclocked), 8GB RAM, Vista Ultimate 64 bit Maybe the !#@$ badges should just be done away with entirely! ![]() |

The last part of this thread is ridiculous. gb009761, I am not a super cruncher, although I have a few machines. I am crunching about 10 times as many results as you and I took me 6 years of crunching to get my bronze Beta. I am sorry to have to tell you this, but there are some things in this world that you have to earn, and sometimes to earn something you have to work hard at getting it. WCG is glad to have you aboard on their team, but don't be asking any of us to give up what we have, and are working on, so that we can make it easier for you. Go out and spend your money on a couple of Quads and improve yur chances exponentially. |

Instead of asking 0.0X% of WCG crunchers who read this forum to uncheck Beta when they have a badge, the better way to get this badge faster, if you have no many computers (or have no admin access) -- share grid computing ideas within your friends and ask for their free computing resources. Everyone will win

Hey David_L6, astrolab & rilian - calm down...
----------------------------------------No way was I insisting that anyone 'uncheck' anything - it was only a suggestion (with a big grin), after all, we're all individuals here as well as volunteers - all with different reasons for contributing. David_L6, I'm glad to hear that you've got so many different computers with different configurations - no doubt, they're all valuable in validating that the chances of a new/modified project works correctly when released to the rest of the grid. Whilst I may not have a computer configuration to match your's exactly, I'm sure that there'll be someone 'out there' who has something at least similar. astrolab, I'm really glad that you're crunching 10x as fast as I am. I have (and I only intend to ever have) 1 computer - my works one. Thus, I'm only a very small part of this grid (I never claimed that I was a 'super cruncher', nor will I ever do so). I'm here to make use of my spare computer cycles in a worthwhile way, and if it takes me 45 days to get a Gold badge (the company that I work for, has recently upgraded my computer to one with a Dual-Core processor), so be it. Please bear in mind, that, although there are some really serious 'super crunchers' out there (of which, by the sounds of it, you are one), there are many, many others with similar kit/intentions as I, who's contribution is no less valuable. rilian, No way was I attempting to downgrade the worth of any kind of badge - no less a Beta badge (which ever colour it may be). As stated, currently, I'm in the 'hunt' for other project badges, and once obtained, I'll reconfigure my settings so that I can increase my chances of getting any kind of Beta work. If I do manage to get any kind of Beta work (even if it does take me several years/decades to reach the level of a Gold Beta badge), then I'll be happy - as it'll be contributing in a positive way to everyone here. ![]() |

I'm planning to enable beta testing on the new computer I've ordered, if it ever arrives. So far, it's been on backorder for about 7 weeks, so don't hold your breath. I'm in no hurry to enable beta testing on my current machine, at least until I get software capable of making a full backup for it, instead of just the files that weren't in use during previous backups.
