It's general question about all projects. If some users changes their preferences to crunch only one project (for example #1):
A) does it speeds that project, or: B) users who crounch all projects can get less #1 work unists, so time to acomplish project #1 does not changes? In other words: does make a difference users preferences to project, or only to WU crunched by that users? Best regards zack55 |

It doesn't make any difference to the progress of the projects.
The techs adjust the projects weights so that all the available work gets done at the best pace. The techs frequently fine tune things - making work units bigger or smaller, or slowing down a project when there is a work flow problem. It's a complicated system, but it works surprisingly well. |

RICE is going fast and hit 10 million work units on Tuesday, well over 53% of project. There were originally 19 million results to do in total, but the developers have fine tuned and increased the job size from 8 to 10 hours, meaning more work in lesser remaining tasks.
----------------------------------------Presently the hold on DDDT (the Hurricane Ike disaster) has helped the other 4 projects to go faster. Immanently we should see another contender for the resource pool... and an influx of more volunteers for I'm sure they will get attracted to this entirely new branch at WCG. Note to Didactylos and self: Maybe a little spiel of the basic work distribution logic in a FAQ topic. Comes up frequently.

It doesn't make any difference to the progress of the projects. It's a pity. I'm crounching from 2005. No one from my family was suffering from disease againts we crounch and I was participating in all projects. But it changed. Now it's personal. So it's a pity that my choice don't make a diference to specific project. It would be helpful. I can understand scientific reasons why distribution is like yoy said, but there are emotional reasons too. No offence and best regards zack55 |

Hi,
----------------------------------------It's not entirely black and white as you read it. If 60 percent of the volunteers choose HCC only, than it's 60% going to HCC and nothing much left for the general pool of "all project" crunchers who elected to do exactly that... volunteer for the general wellbeing of humanity... I have 1 device dedicated to HCC only. Effectively I've seen periods where an all project profile would sometimes get 1 in 15-20 of a project indicating a high preferred "My projects" selection. So make a choice and you do make a difference.

zack55, I'm sure your crunching decision means a lot to you. Many members feel strongly about what their own personal computers are working on.
On the flip side, when (for technical reasons) a member isn't able to focus on the project they really, really want to, it can be comforting to know that the slack is being taken up by another member, and no matter what our project choice, merely contributing at all is helping. The project scientists aren't too worried. Most of them have more results to analyse than they can handle, and even after the grid-enabled phase of their project is over, they will have years of work ahead of them. A couple of projects have also been limited by the speed the researchers could generate work to run on the grid. |
