Hi folks, I have two machines that don't seem to be able to crunch rice WU's. The wcg_rice process will start, but use 0% cpu, while other projects (hcc, hpf2 etc) use a full processor (i.e 50%). Both machines are running windows vista, core 2 processors with 2GB and 1GB of ram respectively. One is running 32bit, the other 64bit vista. UAC is turned off. Preferences are set to use 100% of processors and 90% of ram (idle or not).
I'm not sure what could be causing the problem. I have another 64bit machine that crunches fine ... |

Think MS should give an unconditional refund with interest for testing their S-ware. Supposedly Workstation 2008 did lick the troubles and W7 doing what an OS is supposed to be ... an OS.
----------------------------------------Seriously, I had long troubles with RICE on Vista until the very last version 6.17, 32 bit. If not too much trouble, boot computer and see if they go. If not attach these devices to a separate profile (School, Work, home) that excludes this project. Result logs and entries from the stdoutdae.txt and stdouterr.txt files are welcome. Oh, great. A crash, and a crash reporting the crash.
This does imply that there is a more general problem than just NRW. Anyway. I digress. Marnitz: we don't recommend 6.2.19. The officially supported version is 6.2.28, available from the WCG site. However, since you have had failures with 6.2.19, I recommend you downgrade to the stable 5.10.45 and see whether that solves the problem. Thank you. |

Well I had not observed a RICE job since starting. Hung on 6:38 minutes, no CPU time used, whilst the HCC on the second core happily ran. After exiting the client, closing the service, the RICE job remained loaded. Killed it.

Hi guys
----------------------------------------I have downgraded one client to version 5.10.45. The problem has remained. On this machine I still have a rice task using 0% while hpf2 happily uses 100% of the other core. I have left this process in memory, hopefully to provide debugging info :) In the meantime these two machines have been moved to a different profile to prevent them from getting more rice wu's. Not at the moment. This NRW problem has been showing up for a while now. It is the sort of problem that the staff should look into, but right now we are getting a new project underway and everybody will be busy trying to fix the inevitable bugs. Also, we are bringing up a new server farm in Canada and preparing to switch to it while trying to minimize disruption. So I think that the best temporary fix is not to run NRW on machines that produce this error. We probably will not get around to this bug until sometime next year.  It's not that we don't care . . . it's just that we always have a back log of bugs and new projects and so we are always shuffling our schedules to try to turn out the most work given our limited resources. So I think that the best temporary fix is not to run NRW on machines that produce this error. We probably will not get around to this bug until sometime next year. Done this already. I still have a rice task sitting in memory/stalled. Is there something I can do before blindly terminating it causing an error. Or some other information I can gather from it (for use when the problem is looked into)? Or should I just cancel it and wait till this problem is addressed? Regards, Marnitz |
