confused Connection Fail, without remorse

Hey, guys, what's up?

I'm testing out BOINC for CS at the University of Waterloo, and it doesn't work. Figures... nothing else does, lol. We're thinking of putting this on our Grad PCs so that they can put the idle time to use, and not to mention all our labs do a lot of sitting around (All three major OS types: Linux (usually ubuntu, sometimes redhat), Mac OSX, and Windows XP (there might be some vista that snuck in there...).
Anyways, using the add/remove feature, I was able to install it without usage of the terminal. Installed fine, no errors at all, and the program looks fine, but won't connect. I get this error message:

BOINC Manager - Connection Failed
BOINC Manager is not able to connect to a BOINC client.
Would you like to try to connect again? [No] [Yes]

I've looked around for solutions... and I haven't come across anything that actually helped that much. It will not connect to "localhost" (Advanced--Select Computer), and it won't connect when the manager starts up...

Also, running it from the terminal (the command is just "boinc", right?) returns an error saying that it is not installed... this is kind of weird, and I'm not sure what to do about that.

I've installed and re-installed multiple times, twice from add/remove and twice from the downloadable .sh

I'm trying to run this on a new AMD64 computer with a pretty huge bandwidth number, so I don't see how it could be that... Also, I am using Ubuntu 8.04 with a bunch of additional packaged from KDE (and so forth) that come standard with our UoW disk image.

Any help appreciated! Thank you in advance :)

Is the core client running? You can't connect to something that isn't there!

Multiple anything won't help. Pick a way you want to install it, and we will help solve that specific problem. There are a number of causes for your reported problem, so I would like to narrow it down.

Re: Connection Fail, without remorse

That's my problem (I think). I'm fairly new to this software, so don't be surprised if I come across as a little uneducated (I found out about WCG at a conference, and suggested we figure it out, lucky me I was appointed the guy that does it! :P).

When I tell it to join up with a BOINC client, it sits there for a while, and then tells me it can not connect.

It says that I should click "advanced" and then "select computer". I've got it set to "localhost" right now... and I don't think that's right ('cause it's not working!).

Thanks for the reply!

(Also; Sorry for slow response, I am juggling multiple projects and preformances)

Re: Connection Fail, without remorse

localhost is correct.

But the "boinc" process must already be running. If you installed it from your package manager, then it is probably configured as a service. Make sure it started properly.

The boinc service runs at startup and quietly gets on with computing (once you have set it up, anyway). BOINC Manager is just for monitoring and configuring.

If you used the .sh from this site, then it won't be configured as a service. You must start the boinc process yourself, first (and add it to the relevant startup scripts so that it runs automatically). That's a lot of bother, so usually we recommend using the package.

Re: Connection Fail, without remorse

The last time I installed I used the download manager... so I have to make it a service? The only thing I have listed under "boinc" is the "boinc manager" though... is my service missing then? Or... how would I go about setting the service up?

Re: Connection Fail, without remorse

Try following the step-by-step instructions here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BOINC

Please ask again if you need anything clarifying, if it doesn't work, or even just to report success.

Thank you.

Hi wyrt,
Glad to hear there is more WCG activity at the old alma mater. Hope you connected your user name to the team. I do miss the spectacle known as the Red Room.

cool Re: Connection Fail, without remorse

Success! Once again the terminal trumps all errors. I'm curious to know why it didn't work the other two ways, but that's not terribly important because there is at least one way to do it.

Thanks for your help, guys. We'll see how CS receives this :)

The plan is to put it on grad student computers, and leave them a note that pops up upon first startup that tells them that BOINC is there if they're interested. I think there's somebody else looking into the Windows XP/Mac OSX side of things... I mostly do linux here.

But yeah, this was way more helpful than the other resources that I found... thank you!
