I have 4 q6600 quad computers. Two are running windows xp. One is running ubuntu and the other is running vista. They are all running at the same speed and most of the benchmarks are close but for the integers mips on the ubuntu computer. The benchmarks are as follows
OS integers floating ubuntu 10485 2258 xp1 5136 2320 xp2 5084 2292 vista 5093 2336 As one can see the vista computer is first in floating point mips but is leading the slowest by only 3.5%. The Ubuntu computer is first in integers mips but by more than 100% over all the rest. I have been running two of these computers for about 2 months now. They are the ubuntu and a xp. In that time frame the ubuntu is leading the xp by 36 results. That is about 7% more for the ubuntu than the xp. Integers mips must not be that important otherwise the ubuntu would have a much better increase in the number of results. Even though the ubuntu has more results it has less points by a similar per cent. The question is should I install ubuntu in all of my computers? |

How much do we wager on the Ubuntu machine being 64 bit?
----------------------------------------Counting results is only going to work by approximation... all depends on the mix and the momentary toughness of batches send to different OSses. Jean Boullier identified that HCC has a higher integer component doing better when running 64 bit/Linux.

The question is should I install ubuntu in all of my computers? If you are ready to crunch HCC exclusively that will make a serious difference. Particularly with the integer benchmarks that you are showing. My q6600 is overclocked by 20 % and my floating points benchmarks are in line with yours + 20 %. But for the integer benchmarks I have about 5700 in 32-bit (only yours + 12%) and 8100 in 64-bit, i.e. yours minus 23 %. What have you done to your integer ALUs? Back to your question, with HCC only and my "poor" integers the daily throughput under Ubuntu 64 is about 25-30 % higher than under XP 32. If you run a mix of all projects (or worse, all but HCC!) the benefit should be much lower but there should be some, still. Cheers. Jean. |
