Re: Christmas Race 2008

The trick is to start crunching full time 3 days before a race and set the buffer a bit higher. This way, any work you complete and return is already "mature", thus a much higher chance of immediate validation... mind you I never told you to do this all the time as someone else who crunches without buffer will have to wait for you cleaning the cache out ;>)

for that matter I guess you could just load up 10 days worth of work before the challenge starts and unplug the æthernet until the challenge is underway. I took the opposite approach and started 3 days late with no cache. biggrin

ROFL, my spell checker changes e.thernet to æthernet, never saw that one before.

So the time frame component of WCG competition is basically useless?

Not really. Given the need to validate results, there will always be some delay being credited, either for you or someone else. I have had results that were not validated for three weeks but the vast majority are validated within two days and a significant percentage are validated the day they are returned. In my case I am crunching nearly full time anyway so race or no race my production is relatively steady. If you are not running full time normally, then ramping up before a race will help your score a bit.

Some teams split their work over different projects but can shift to WCG for a competition. E.S.L. and SETI USA come to mind as teams that can make impressive production increases for an event.

It would appear that the crunchathons here only make sense for WCG regulars.

. . . those teams who participate from the wider world of BOINC are at a definite disadvantage.

This one is long enough, it should not be much of an issue.. on the plus side we are moving up 2 more positions today. We will just have to keep the workings of the race in mind if we do another one, especially if it is a short one.

On a side note, I'm really liking this project, the badges make it a bit more of a challenge than shooting for a static quantity of points like with other projects.
