Re: Seems Inactive to me

Last specific news on here was a post by (Prof) watowich on Sep 30

You have not searched correctly. From the third thread (news from galveston) of the DDDT forum section, Stan Watowich's post is giving infos from the source (Nov 6, 2008).

and now it has been another month with so little factual information but the occasional use of 'imminent' and 'soon'. Despite the disaster in Galveston, I have to believe that DDDT and WCG are using some semblance of project management that has got to be able to provide better information than being out by weeks and now months.

Re: Seems Inactive to me

I stand corrected. The Sep 30 post was the last one that gave information more specific then "soon", or "imminent".
The phrase "if DDDT comes back to life" also appeared in a recent post by someone other than Prof Watowich.

Apologies if I've ruffled some feathers, and I offer my sympathy for the people affected by H Ike. Closing down departments and selling off valuable real estate (perhaps to people who are not much beyond "arm's length" away) is the sort of thing that politicians and bean counters in this part of the world do when a financial challenge arises. The "resort hotel" bit was me being cynical.

[Edit]For the benefit of readers seeking info on the status of DDDT at this time, I think that the following deserved to be copied here.
In a comment under his reponse to another matter in thread Suggestions/Feedback >> New year coming soon... new model need ..., WCG Admin bbover3 said on 8 Dec 2008:
Regarding DDDT and new information: We don't have any current updates except that the research team at UTMB is still working on getting their technical environment to work in post-hurricane Ike conditions. Although it's been 3 months since the hurricane hit Galveston, the research team had their personal lives severely disrupted by hurricane damage. So first they took care of their personal lives and now they are trying to get the technical environment up and running. Feel free to keep asking for updates from the researchers in the DDDT forum.

Someone should be more careful on the choice of words, particularly on those matters... smile

Should the lawyers be called in?

They probably would prefer some engineers and hardware technicians.

Re: Seems Inactive to me

Hi !
After such a disaster like Ike, I think that we have to be fully understanding for the time which is requested by the re-build of the infrastructure.
In between, every of us is able to crunch on other interesting and important projects. We are still warm at home, not having lost anything.
For my-self, I am not impatient nor concerned about the future of DDDT. My thoughts are only for the researchers and their family which have to suffer a hard time.
Be confident !
Cheers,
Yves

Re: Seems Inactive to me

every project has its down times... this one just has some obvious reasons.. like Ike...

i wish everyone who is involved at the scientists end well and hope to see more work units soon...

I do understand the reason and can guess about lots of other reasons why you havent gotten us more work yet... but at least we have other projects to crunch here as well... by the time i have my badges in the gold i hope your up and runnin again cause i would like to continue crunching these jobs as well

Re: Seems Inactive to me

Hello from UTMB! No, we are not inactive. Yes, we are bringing this project back online. Yes, it is taking us longer than expected since we continually run into unexpected personnel and infrastructure surprises. But, behind the scenes, we are working hard and are committed to bringing this project back online. The coding and testing of Phase 2 (free energy calculations) of this project is occurring even as Phase 1 sits apparently silent.

Our main LINUX cluster used for pre/post processing of workunits and storage of the vast amount of information generated by your crunching computers was offline. Now, only our 12 TB IBM DS3200 storage system is offline. We are reinstalling 3rd party interface boards and drivers to bring this system up (if this fails, we will move this storage system to another cluster, and work from there). Surprising as it may seem, this is taking time.

Thank you for your continued patience.

Best wishes to all for this Holiday Season from the DDD-T group at UTMB.

Stan Watowich

Re: Seems Inactive to me

Actual feedback from an actual project scientist without having to go through nine pages of self congratulatory drivel in tiny brown font from "some guy".

I love this project! love struck

Thanks for the update, Stan. biggrin
