I'm trying to install BOINC on my new system (a brand new shiny Fedora Core 10) and -of course- BOINC will not start. I had this problem in the past, but I can't really remember how I solved it.
So, here's what I've done so far: 1) sudo yum -y install boinc-client boinc-manager 2) start BOINC GUI -> Select Computer... -> put localhost and the password in gui_rpc_auth.cfg nothing happens, in the status bar I only see "connecting to localhost". The attach to project menu does not even pop up a dialog... This has NEVER worked for me, so I did: 3) boinc_client --attach_project www.worldcommunitygrid.org <my key here> This attaches the project, downloads a couple of files and doesn't do anything anymore 4) Reopen GUI. Same as point 2, but this time I immediatly see "disconnected" in the status bar 5) Don't know if this is useful, but I've tried: service boinc-client start With this I get a warning "The BOINC client requires initialization". 6) Tried this: boinc_cmd --host localhost --password `cat gui_rpc_auto.cfg` And I get: Authorization failure: -155 So, if someone can help me it would be really be appreciated. At least I know I'm not alone... as many linux users seem to have the same issues with this |

Your option 5 *should* be correct (although most packages would start the service automatically). I'm not familiar with the Fedora BOINC port.
It would help me if you could paste the output from your attempt (3). |

Thanks Didactylos, here's the output
----------------------------------------As you can see now it says that I'm already attached to the project, which makes sense, I guess. I highlighted the only unusual things I get. 29-Nov-2008 12:51:21 [---] Starting BOINC client version 6.2.15 for i686-pc-linux-gnu [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 29, 2008 11:59:55 AM] |

You are using a pre-release version of BOINC. I think that's unwise.
If the Fedora port of BOINC 6 isn't ready yet, use 5.10 instead. 29-Nov-2008 12:51:21 [http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/] URL: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; This means that the first network communication with the WCG servers failed.Computer ID: not assigned yet; location: (none); project prefs: default Looking at your log, it appears that absolutely no network activity is happening, not even the localhost traffic required for BOINC Manager to work. Either there is a problem with libcurl or your network stack, or you have set up a firewall with far too paranoid settings. I suggest you downgrade to the stable 5.10 branch before worrying about the network problems, though. |

oooops... I didn't notice it was a development version... I just installed it with yum thinking it would be the last stable release!Anyway, as I had to install another version I just fetched the final 6.2.15 from the Boinc website and it works perfectly from the GUI (finally!) without having to do anything from the terminal. Thank you and sorry for wasting your time on such a trivial issue ![]() |

It's really not your fault. BOINC versions aren't released, they escape. Often in pieces. The latest Ubuntu port is broken, too.
