After every boot Boinc Manager is started as an icon in the tray. Not everyone wants this. If you don't want this, you have to remove the automagic run entry from your registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\ Not so common for most of the users. I think this is done, because of a shortcut in the User or All users startup directory is easily to remove. My question is possibly related but expressed differently. Under 5.10.45 we had a --detach option that would allow Boinc to run nearly invisibly. What is the recommended setup to mimic that function? The criteria being: 1) no Icon in the taskbar, 2) no additional Computer user preventing the immediate appearance of the desktop on reboot, 3) autostart, and 4) no startup messages appearing on Boinc startup. |

another problem with new version on Vista?
----------------------------------------my sister uses Vista (which I'm not to happy do deal with), and after installing BOINC it all works fine...except the problem with CPU benchmark! it is a machine with 2,0GHz dual-core CPU & 2GB of RAM...the benchmark says that it has around 750 floating MIPS & 1680 integer MIPS! well that is the main problem, when the new version doesn't recognize the newer processors on the market! but the P3T & P2A works fine...the same result as before! |

Install using the protected option and unticking any shared user options. That installs BOINC as service, same as 5.10.45 Now Astrolab, you've been around a bit so you know of the FAQ index. Section 1 there is a link to the detail version 6 install instructions.

well that is the main problem, when the new version doesn't recognize the newer processors on the market! The new version (as well as the previous ones) pulls all power that you allow your processor to deliver. Check that your processor is running full speed and not saving energy (or avoiding overheating) by reducing the frequency of its clock. Cheers. Jean. |

Thanks Sek and please believe that I am not upset with you. I appreciate all the work that you and all the CAs and Tech do to keep this system running. My original question was prompted by a possible misunderstanding that Boinc as a service was going to create a new user that would cause a Windows computer to stop at the Welcome screen and force the selection of a user. Since that does not happen, I believe, it is simply a task of understanding that Boinc runs hidden while Boincmgr runs visible and how do we setup the system to run one or the other.
Now Astrolab, you've been around a bit so you know of the FAQ index. Section 1 there is a link to the detail version 6 install instructions. I understand the mild rebuke, as I should have expected it, and possibly deserved it. I was making an assumption that all the documentation lagged behind the software development, as that is the typical implementation process with software development (first hand knowledge). I should have looked at these first and I did not.Except that I find the following FAQ has not been updated for 6.2 install. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/reg/ms/viewThankYouAll.do?platformPick=win and this FAQ admits it is incomplete and has not been updated since 2Sept08 and is incomplete http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?langu...66db7dbac8d42ef828063252a and this page has not been updated since 6.2.10 http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/ClientSetupWinSix The challenge from reading all three of these FAQs is that they are written for technicians and explain how to do things. I suggest creating a FAQ that explains the install based on what you want to do. The install might be able to ask different questions: 1. Run Boinc at Boot or Logon 2. Run Boincmgr at Logon or not. 3. Run screensaver (see below) 4. Installer or all users can use Boincmgr I understand what the following quote means but who else does? To keep things simple we decided to remove the option and set up the system so that both BOINC and the BOINC Manager are started at system startup or logon If the users want to change this behavior they can delete the BOINC Manager shortcut and/or change the service properties via the service control manager administrative tool. What the install does not do is help us to know and learn how to separate Boinc from Boincmgr. All I have learned has been from the CAs and experience. Another example is the Screen saver (SS). I have looked, and it may be there somewhere, but what is this function. Is it simply installing a SS? Is it running WCG only when the SS is invoked? Is it running WCG even when the SS is invoked? I guess it must be #2 which is why I do not run this mode. If this is so, why is there an option to run when idle? Isn't this similar since a SS is only invoked when idle? You spend a lot of time posting answers about the SS. Questions, Questions. The answer to my original question is install as a service and find where Boincmgr is started and prevent that start. There is no new user created, Boinc starts at boot time and manually configure the system to not start Boincmgr. The user does not know Boinc is running and cannot interface with Boinc without going to command prompt. Just like 5x, 6x has no way to prevent the autostart of Boincmgr without manually changing the Startup programs. Boinc no longer supports the --detach option and now no longer presents an icon in the taskbar on startup which appears only when Boincmgr is started. Let me know if I still didn't get it right. Thanks |

Hello Zigfried, If you are unable to install a program because the previous installation ended in an error then you might use a program by Microsoft called: Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. Be careful: do only select WCG-Boinc entries! The program can be downloaded from: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/en-us as English version, and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/pt-br as Portuguese (Brazil) version. Good luck, Path7. |

I cant install boinc anymore? Unable to install 5.10.45 or 6.2.28 :( Hi Zigfried! Could you please retry with 6.2.28 and make sure that - both directories are not physically the same one - none is a subdirectory of the other - the data directory is not a subdirectory of C:\Program Files (particularly if you are running Vista) If it is still not going well, use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall Boinc before trying again. If still not successful please come back and tell us the names (full path, please) you have chosen for both directories, as well as which version of Windows you are using. Cheers. Jean. |
