Excessive CPU usage

I would like to keep this application running in the background while I work, but it consumes almost 100% of my CPU usage and slows my system way down. When I hit the snooze button my CPU usage drops to about 4% with Notes running. I have a new laptop with XP, 1.6 GHz, and 512 MB Ram. I'm on a fast ethernet connection. Any suggestions?

This is what it is supposed to do. The idea of the application is to use all spare CPU cycles to work on the data. Thus, you CPU will almost always be at 100% while it runs. However, it shouldn't interfere with system responsiveness as the application runs at a lower priority than any other applications that you may run. In other words, anytime another applicaiton needs to do something, it will take the CPU away from the agent.

When you say it slows your system way down, what exactly are you experiencing?

Re: Excessive CPU usage

I would like to limit the CPU usage of this so it does not overheat my laptop. Leaving it running on my laptop make it get very hot very quickly and I then suffer crahses and other issues.

I'l like limit it to approx 50% of CPU usage, so the other 50% is idle.

Re: Excessive CPU usage

As far as I know, this has to be done by Windows itself and they don't have that yet, except for the Windows Datacenter Server editions.
I don't know of any tools who can manage this. Anyone?

My system was running slow, but seems to be OK now. There must have been some other issue. I recently had a problem with new a system software load that ran my system at 100% CPU usage and caused me lots of problems with system response, and I had to eventually reload the system. That is why I was concerned when I seen 100% CPU usage.

biggrin Re: Excessive CPU usage

For those of you out there wanting it to use %100 of your CPU only in screensaver (similar to SETI@Home) There is an option for this if you open up the Console, click on the little checkbox at the bottom right for PREFERENCES and check the box that says run only as screen saver. I'm really happy they included this option!

Re: Excessive CPU usage

The CPU in computers is actually 100% utilized no matter what is going on, except when it is powered off, or stopped. There is a secret "idle" task running in the background that runs at lower priority than everything else in the computer, even lower than the grid agent. The idle task counts up the percentage of the time it runs and calls this "idle time" and reduces the reported CPU utilization figure accordingly. Neither the grid agent nor the idle task will run if your computer has other work to do. However, since the grid agent runs at slightly higher priority than the idle task, the idle task won't run at all and thus report that your computer is always 100% utilized. These two tasks account for the otherwise remaining unused cycles of your CPU.
