World Community Grid - View Thread - [solved] unable to connect to boinc-client after update/upgrade to 6.2.14

Hi all,
I know that the above client is unsupported but still if anybody is able to find something it would be cool.

I have been unable to connect to my client after update.

I also did all the instructions as given on the BOINC page as well.

1. Open /etc/group in a text editor.
2. Look for the line starting with boinc:x:<group ID number>:.
3. Edit the line to look like boinc:x:<group ID number>:username
4. Save the file and close the editor.
5. In a terminal, enter sudo chmod g+rw /var/lib/boinc-client
6. Enter sudo chmod g+rw /var/lib/boinc-client/*.*
7. Enter sudo ln -s /var/lib/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg /home/username/gui_rpc_auth.cfg
8. Enter sudo chown boinc:boinc /home/username/gui_rpc_auth.cfg

Now line 7 gives me that /home/username/gui_rpc_auth.cfg or in my case

/home/shirish/gui_rpc_auth.cfg already exists.

so I moved that file to be /home/shirish/gui_rpc_auth.cfg /home/shirish/gui_rpc_auth.cfg.orig

On a hunch I decided to look at a listing of /var/lib/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg and guess what

$ ll /var/lib/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 34 2008-11-12 07:24 /var/lib/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg -> /etc/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg

both the files are blank.

The /home/shirish/gui_rpc_auth.cfg.orig does have some string.

If anybody has any idea or suggestion as to what's wrong please lemme know.

I tried two things after this to test connectivity :-

The GNU/Linux instructions given at wcg which responded well which told me that its able to connect .

This told me that its connecting.

Then did the following which makes it functioning again (atleast for this session) :-


$ /etc/init.d/boinc-client status  
* Status of BOINC core client: stopped.

Then restarted it

$ sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client start [sudo] password for shirish:   
* Starting BOINC core client: boinc                                                                                   [ OK ]   
* Setting up scheduling for BOINC core client and children:                                                                               [ OK ]

Then saw the status again :-


$ /etc/init.d/boinc-client status  
* Status of BOINC core client: running.

Then did boincmgr which shows my project running.

Would look at this next session so would know if its stopping each session or what.
