I have a Dell XPS M1530 w/ Windows Vista. I was running the boinc client smoothly for about 6 months. Then all of a sudden my client was unable to connect to the localhost any longer.
If I go to Advanced --> Select Computer... then put in "localhost" or "127.0.0.1" for the Host Name the client times out and returns a: World Community Grid - BOINC Client - Connection Failed World Community Grid - BOINC Client is not able to connect to a World Community Grid client. Would you like to try again? It never connects. I have checked my hosts file in Windows/System32/drivers/etc and I have an entry in there for localhost which is 127.0.0.1 Thanks for any help received!!! |

This usually means the core client (boinc.exe) isn't running or has crashed. The other possibility is that your security software is blocking communication.
I need to know some things: What version of BOINC are you using? Is the boinc.exe process running? (Use Task Manager, and click "Show processes from all users".) What security software do you use? Is BOINC installed as a service? |

- BOINC Version: 5.10.45
- The boinc.exe is running. - McAfee Security Center. - BOINC installed for a single user. I've noticed that when you uninstall the software the BOINC folder remains in Program Files. I'm going to try and delete this folder and install. Maybe there is a corrupt data or program file. |

I assume you have tried restarting BOINC Manager?
Anyway, the most productive thing you can do is check McAfee's settings. Almost certainly it has decided to block BOINC (although I don't recall a similar issue with McAfee being reported). |

After deleting the BOINC folder and reinstalling the client was able to connect right way.
Thanks for your time. |
