I also tried resetting the project but its of no use.

Re: boinc is suspended

We don't support that version of BOINC. It was withdrawn by Berkeley (because it was too buggy to work properly).

Re: boinc is suspended

So how do we upgrade to this version? The Ubuntu repository is still using 6.2.12-1.

Re: boinc is suspended

On Ubuntu, there is no compelling reason to use BOINC 6. Use BOINC 5.10.45, which should be available in the repository.

I'm sure the Ubuntu folks will get their act together eventually with BOINC 6, but until then, use 5.10.

Most of the features that were promised in BOINC 6 evaporated, and the only remaining major feature was security improvements for Windows and better support for Windows Vista. None of this is relevant to Linux.

Re: boinc is suspended

Hi all,
Sorry to break bad news but there is no 5.10.45 on Intrepid Ibex (or Ubuntu 8.10) . We have only 6.2.12-1 on ubuntu

http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=bo...=intrepid&section=all

So for GNU/Linux ubuntu users the only way is to download an old working version of the same from boinc or WCG site.

You can simply select a different repository.

Any link to the the repository you are saying would be nice.

Also do you guys any light at the end of the tunnel for GNU/Linux versions of BOINC (your feel) that would also help us to know what we should stabilize on in Ubuntu/Debian. AFAIK Debian has 6.2.18 in the experimental repository.

Re: boinc is suspended

Several things bother me about the Messages posted:
1) host name

2) time goes backward
Sunday 09 November 2008 07:34:18 AM IST|World Community Grid|[cpu_sched] Starting mb003_00075_6(resume)
Sunday 09 November 2008 02:00:37 AM IST|World Community Grid|Restarting task mb003_00075_6 using hpf2 version 603
3) Why not allow 600 or 700 MB?

4) Why bother using a local preferences file?

Greetings shirish,

I have tested the 8.10 Ubuntu client when it was released and the 6.2 (pre-release) version worked ok for me. It appears that this is not the case for everyone. The easiest way to get the 5.10.45 client installed on your 8.10 Ubuntu machine is to add a few lines to your sources.list file. (NOTE: I use vi to edit my files other people use other text editors like nano/pico) (NOTE2: You will want to do a COMPLETE REMOVAL of the boinc-client and boinc-manager in your synaptic package manager before proceeding. And once the complete removal is complete please close the manager to prevent any issues)

Pull up a terminal by going to Application -> Accessories -> Terminal

type in this to edit the file.
sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list

In this file look for the 4 lines that reference universe. Right under those, add these two lines.

deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy universe
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy universe

This will pull in the repository for hardy which is linked to the 5.10.45 version of BOINC.

Now you'll want to pull up your Synaptic package manager and click the reload button to pull in the repository information. Once this is done, search for boinc.

Left click on the boinc-client so that it is only highlighted. Then you'll want to "Force version..." which is located under the menu option "Package" at the top of the window. In the pull down box that shows up you'll want to change from 6.2 to 5.10 version of boinc and click Force Version. You'll need to do this for the boinc-manager also. Once this is done, you should see that both of these have the version of 5.10 next to their names, you can now mark them for installation.

Hope this helps,

-Uplinger

Re: boinc is suspended

One more thing, when you do this, you will need to be careful when updating your machine in the future as it will always try to update your boinc-client to the 6.2 version which is something you won't want to do. So be careful on installing updates to remove the check marks next to boinc-client and boinc-manager.
