Where did the time go?

I had a "stuck" HPF2 work unit (ma940_00001_2). My CPU time was 22 hours 35 minutes. My progress was 59.945%.

I followed the instructions in BOINC: Task Appears to be making No Progress / Seems Stuck. My work unit started working again, immediately. <big grin>

But the CPU time went from over 22½ hours to 7 hours 24 minutes. It lost over 15 hours of CPU credit. Where did the time go?

[append]

I thought I should add the work unit number, so that the WCG staff has a record of it in case there are lots of 'time outs' on this work unit.

Re: Where did the time go?

Sadly, it was the last checkpoint time to which the result could recover. It was unfortunately crunching air after the checkpoint that occurred at 7:24.

Sorry

[Edit: Have added a line to the referenced FAQ to cover the question of "lost" computing time aka progress]

Re: Where did the time go?

Hi debsgr8,
The last 15 hours were spent on some endless loop. You picked up from the last checkpoint written, which stores the time in the checkpoint file. We have never tracked this HPF2 bug down because it is not repeatable.

It's a good thing I'm not a "stats junkie". <wink>
