5 Failed WU (CreateProcess() failed) Question

I have a single device that posted 5 failed WU within minutes of one another. Per Results Status the error for all 5 is: CreateProcess() failed - Access is denied. (0x5).

Looking at the log I see mostly the same messages for all 5:

11/01/08 7:32:07 PM|World Community Grid|Starting task R00189_42c5a5d9b1b1d93d7822da1b489d644b_01_000_17 using rice version 617

The difference is the WUs (3 Rice - 2 Cancer), not all had the message about rebooting and the number of process creation failed messages varies from 5 to 10.

Environment:
BOINC client 5.10.45
Device is a AMD 4800+ x64 dual core
Gigabyte mobo (onboard display adaptor)
WinXP SP3
Zone Alarm Security Suite
Not over clocked
Not using BOINC screen saver or any other screen saver (set to power monitor off after 30 minutes of inactivity

Has been cranking out WUs without error for a few months and no changes made to the OS or app environment other than MS updates last week.

Can anyone tell me what causes this failure and if there is something on the device I should look at?

Thank you in advance for any assistance/information provided!

Re: 5 Failed WU (CreateProcess() failed) Question

First question since you have not mentioned it explicitly: have you tried rebooting your computer?

It seems that something is forbidding the science application to write where it should. Are you sure nothing has changed in your authorizations?

See the following thread to see if that gives you a clue:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=20426

If you decide to re-install Boinc you might take this opportunity and install the WCG beta version currently in test:
Please help us beta test the 6.2.25 World Community Grid - BOINC software

Cheers. Jean.

Re: 5 Failed WU (CreateProcess() failed) Question

Ciao,

Read a note on Saturday that ZA was at it again too. Set exceptions of the W/R rights on the Data Directory devilish

Sorry

Re: 5 Failed WU (CreateProcess() failed) Question

JmBoullier: Yes once I found the error I rebooted. I also read the thread link and am wondering if the problem is related to backups being done by Windows Hove Server (WHS) and/or a ZA scan. I went back in the log to the point BOINC was installed on the device and found a previous instance of the problem on 10/09/08. There was a 10 minute period in which 4 WU's errored for the same reason. Once that period was over all WU appear to run fine and for the ones I still can see in results status were validated. The timing on this occurrance is about the time a WHS backup would run.

The instance referenced in this note occurred outside the backup window but there may have been a ZA scan running. I'll have to do some additional digging to see if this was the case.

Given the way this is occurring, short period where all WU's starting error out followed by normal start/end it would seem to be a problem related to some short term event going on in the device.

As to installing the beta. I had considered it but the device is my wife's primary PC. She has the computer savy of my Golden Retriever and I am hesitant to introduce anything on the device that may interrupt her normal routine. I plan to install it on one of the other devices I'm using as a next weekend activity if time permits.

Sekerob: Sorry to seem dense but I do not understand your suggestion. Can you please expand on what W/R rights on the data directory means? Are you refering to the logged on user Windows rights? If so, the user is an Admin with full rights to the directory.

Thanks to both for your responses!
