I am running a dual core Pentium 4 2.8-ghz with 2-gigs of RAM, and 38-gigs of free space on the Linux drive.
Yesterday, I upgraded the Linux OS to Ubuntu 8.10 from the prior Ubuntu release. Apparently, the upgrade changed the BOINC Manager client to a pre-release version 6.2.12 There is now a message warning " This is a development version of BOINC and may not function properly." Since the upgrade my machine has completed two work units, one for Human Protein, the other for FightAids, however it been unable to upload the results. I am repeatedly getting these error messages: Project Communication failed:attempting access to reference site. Internet access OK: project servers may temporarily be down. Scheduler request failed: Peer certificate cannot be authenticated with known CA c Anybody have any ideas on how I can get this system uploading again? BOIC otherwise appears to be working fine and is almost ready to try and upload two more work units. |

That seems to be a typical case of a CA-certificate out of date.
----------------------------------------If you can look for the file "ca-bundle.crt" in your Boinc directory could you please tell us what its timestamp looks like? Mine (still in Ubuntu 8.04 with Boinc 5.10.45) says "22 Feb 2008 21:40:08 CET". Cheers. Jean. |

If the ca-bundle.crt file is obsolete or absent you can find a link for downloading a valid one in this Start Here FAQ:
----------------------------------------BOINC error: "Scheduler request failed: ...th? access rights?)" Cheers. Jean. |

I downloaded the file ca-bundle.crt. The computer will not allow me to move it to the directory where my boinc-manager is located. It is located in \usr\bin. For some reason it does not have its own folder.

RtB are you still on 6.1.12? That is a very alpha BOINC version. The Berkeley recommended is 6.2.15 for Linux. WCG is going to release a 6.2.2x soon, but not sure if it will come in other than a Windows version. Anyway those should have the certificate fill included... run the package to get it in the right place.

Jean: Thanks for responding so quickly.
I was able to locate the file "ca-bundle.crt" on my system and it lives in the folder "var/lib/boinc-client" When I look at its properties the only dates it shows are the date-modified, which is Thursday when I upgraded Ubuntu, and the last time accessed, which is a couple of hours ago. I tried downloading a new copy of "ca-bundle.crt" as per the instructions you linked to, but the system will not allow me to replace the file that is already in the folder. I also found this location for the certificate " /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt" which has an empty update folder and tried to move the downloaded copy of "ca-bundle.crt" there but again it was not allowed by the system. Viewing the two "ca-bundle.crt" files with a text editor, they are not the same. The downloaded version has readable English text in it, and the version currently in the program appears to be large blocks of random letters and numbers with no spaces. It is late here and I am going to call it a night, but possibly sign on as "root" tomorrow and see if I will be allowed to replace the "ca-bundle.crt" file with the freshly downloaded version. Thanks again for your help, and any other suggestions you may have. Best Regards, Bill aka CaptainMidnight |

For good order, my certificate is under BOINC 6.2.25 Beta in the "Data Directory", which location is listed in the message start up log. Our problem resolution FAQ documents so: http://worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=15682
----------------------------------------[Edit, just found out that opposed to what was written above, under the 6.2.25 beta the client wants this to be in the Program Directory (windows). Just found out I had an expired copy in the data directory that failed verification. Cant speak for Linux or Mac at this time]

I have version 6.2.12. I downloaded the version from wcg site and it is a shell program and it keeps telling me that I need to open it with wine. I have had enough problems with vista and boinc and now to have problems with ubuntu. I do not know if the problems are with the operating system or with the boinc program but someone should figure out these problems before wcg loses a lot of volunteers.

Rick, there are two obvious possibilities. Either you downloaded the wrong version, or your file associations are wrong.
Before you tell me you checked already, I should tell you that there is a known issue with the WCG website where you can select a different operating system, but get sent the Windows installer anyway. |

After spending several more hours trying to solve the problem of the completed worked units not uploading I am still getting the same error messages in Boinc Manager:
Sat 01 Nov 2008 02:28:11 PM EDT|World Community Grid|Started upload of faah4549_000093_MC_xMut_md04590_04_1_3 Sat 01 Nov 2008 02:28:12 PM EDT||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site Sat 01 Nov 2008 02:28:12 PM EDT|World Community Grid|Temporarily failed upload of faah4549_000093_MC_xMut_md04590_04_1_3: HTTP error Sat 01 Nov 2008 02:28:12 PM EDT|World Community Grid|Backing off 2 hr 1 min 33 sec on upload of faah4549_000093_MC_xMut_md04590_04_1_3 Sat 01 Nov 2008 02:28:13 PM EDT||Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down. At the same time, I am getting this error message in the terminal window: (boincmgr:8641): Pango-WARNING **: Invalid UTF-8 string passed to pango_layout_set_text() I have tried numerous ways to copy a new "ca-bundle.crt" certificate file to replace the one that is there, but even as "root" the system will not allow it. I have used the Synaptic Package Manager and twice re-installed Boinc and it has not made a difference. I still have four completed work units that are ready for upload. As with the experience of "Rick the Brick" noted in this thread, the non-upload problem started with the upgrade of the Linux OS to Ubuntu 8.10 on Thursday afternoon. Prior to that, the system worked fine, and I did nothing else that would have changed anything. It is apparent that somehow Ubuntu has included an old "pre-release" version of Boinc with its new OS version, and on its Synaptic Package Manager. I doubt that "Rick the Brick" and I are the only two Ubuntu crunchers now having this same problem. However, many of the other upgraders may not have noticed yet. This is likely a wide problem that should be addressed by someone above the cruncher level at World Community Grid and someone else at BOINC working with Ubuntu people on finding a fix that can be sent as an automatic upgrade or patch. Otherwise, a significant number of Linux crunchers will be unable to send back results. Thankfully, none of my work units are due until the end of the week, and so I have turned off BOINC and will await an upgrade fix from Ubuntu. |
