Just a side note, (k)ubuntu 8.10 is not ready for prime time IMHO. Very buggy!
I also noted that the version of boinc in the 8.10 repository does not read your WCG profiles properly. I have my profile set to use only 2 processors and it loads up all 4. I've seen this with all the 6.x.x Linux versions and WCG. Stick with boinc 5.10.45. |

Hello Brink!
----------------------------------------In version 6 Boinc has introduced a new way of handling the number of processors, namely giving the maximum percentage of processors that can be used. In your case you should set it to 50 % to achieve what you want if you have a quad, or to 25 % if you have an 8-core. To provide a better compatibility ("better" might be superfluous here ) WCG in its Windows versions currently in beta test has modified the code to take the lesser of the old parameter (still kept in the global preferences file) and of the new one. This change has been reflected in the profile setting pages on the website as you can see. However that will not solve the problem for Linux installations unless WCG develops a WCG-Linux later (I don't know at all if it is in their plans). Regarding Ubuntu 8.10 I am only aware of problems with Boinc** and, sure, on this topic 8.10 has not been properly tested. Cheers. Jean. ** I have not been offered the 8.10 upgrade yet and I am not impatient at all, so I will not look for anticipating it. After my first Linux experience with 7.10 and 8.04 I was rather confident. After what I have read about 8.10 I am disappointed and I will be very careful. |

To solve this problem (which I have as well), has anyone tried re-downloading and re-installing the Linux version of this software from this site -- Ver 5.10.45? That is, after Ubuntu 8.10 is installed, just redownloading and reinstalling the BOINC software from this WCG site? Reinstalling right on top of the software that's already running?

Here's news that might be useful. Even after all that's been written in this thread, I've not been able to get my Ubuntu-Boinc-Wcg to work. So I tried adding a couple of other projects to my BOINC Manager. And they are working splendidly!

Well, Wilhelm - that is what you should expect. World Community Grid is the only project to require secure communication with the servers. Other projects don't bother.
It is this feature that Ubuntu have broken. Again. They break it every single release, and it irritates me no end. |

And, this: Now my WCG resumed working perfectly. All on its own. Go figure.

Sometimes Linux acts worse than Windows... boots occasionally set things right and supposedly 8.10 is finally faster than Vista, I read on a Linux blog ;D

It is this feature that Ubuntu have broken. Again. They break it every single release, and it irritates me no end. Isn't this something WCG can fix with Ubuntu, so that it doesn't happen so predictably? I know Ubuntu is supportive of the BOINC causes. Their Add/Remove Applications program makes BOINC very visible and easy accessible to all users. If you cannot work it out with Ubuntu so that each upgrade doesn't cause this same problem, then can't you have a WCG fix ready to push automatically -- or on these boards -- just as soon as Ubuntu offers each upgrade? Their upgrade cycle is well published and predictable. Personal testimony: I have been a huge supporter of Grid and WCG for several years now. About eight months ago, I even bought this new Ubuntu machine from Dell, just to enhance my crunching for WCG. But now I've gone looking for other projects to run on my Ubuntu BOINC installation -- just because my WCG stopped working -- and now I've decided to keep on with them, even slighting the crunch time I'm giving to WCG. I guess this year's political season has me too tired of finger pointing. Can't we move on and just fix this problem? |
