i'm one of the cpu idle time donater. i been thinking anyway to help expand this community to to speed up the research by having more people to join in .
1. if there is a reward program even as simple as giving certificate to those that accumulated the most points or cheap merchadize etc. would help grow the community . 2. if scientists can show the results of their findings for the failure after we did number crunching would be good. the points is at least let the community know what is the status of the resarch. for example. project like finding cure for cancer etc seem to be a big leap of hope.. but if would be great if the community can see the findings results after they sacrified their machine running 24hours for the projects. and thus explain why need more people to join in to faster up number crunching. hope this help.. i really hope one day of of the project hosted here will have a result |

3. create option for the screensaver not to show the 3d graphic and only plain black to speed up number crushing. i think people who sincerely want to donate cpu cycle will not want to waste cpu cycle rendering 3d screensaver. like me, i just use boinc and i able to crunch 1 task per day.
hope one of my suggestion will become reality any sooner.. really hope to see the community become bigger and met the goal solve of the problem (one of the project) encountered by human |

1. That topic comes up now and then ...
----------------------------------------merchandise ... doubtful certificates ... maybe 2. Each project does post results, but it sometimes must wait for research papers to be published in a journal. Remember that this part is the early, prescreening part of their research, to identify promising drugs or promising directions. 3. I myself set screensaver to (none) to speed up the crunching. You can do that in the Windows Control Panel. I have the monitor set to turn off to standby after 30 minutes to save energy.

hi zhiwei,
----------------------------------------The BOINC screensaver has options via the regular windows desktop control application to go blank after x minutes. You can also set the screensaver to blank by selecting this from the screensaver dropdown list. See FAQ: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=4925#75214 ciao

about cert, make sure the cert is stamp cop and deliver by pos to the user to show we appreciate their contribution rather than like seti, where usre is allow to print their own cert. that way, it just make the cert no value at all, because anyone can just print it.
about merchandize.. hmm. ya. i think might be dificult. but if the point is we reward 1 of 1 million user that do the contribution as to show to others.. ya the projects really paid off something. even as simple as giving gift to high scorer a cpu fan/hard disk fan would be good. hehe .this is to encourage them to on their machine longer hours/ or replace faulty component for on mahine 24 hours to projects. maybe not now. but can be consider in the future. for now, i think certificate is more practical. |

Hi,
----------------------------------------mailing via email is a possibility, but via paper is not very likely, so it probably to become a "print on request". I saw that quite a few BOINC projects now go with this method, usually expressing the contribution in Teraflops... and where would it go if members moved without informing WCG? In fact, WCG has no addresses of any member. merchandise... there is so much turnover just on the t-shirts that the retailer has taken them out of print. BOINC volunteers have developed a general merchandise set. See discussion here http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=2859 cheers

I think that the best way to spread WCG is to actively proselytize: co-workers (start a team where you work), family; watch for newspaper and magazine articles on the subjects in our projects, find the articles on the web, and, if there are comment boxes, fill them with knowledge of what we are doing, and ask for help.
----------------------------------------Also, I have T-shirts from WCG and BOINC. I wear one of them whenever I will be in a crowd on the street in my town. I got two people that way. A lot of communities have small free newspapers. Write a letter and end it to that paper or those papers. They are always looking for filler. RSS feeds and newsletters via email: I have a lot from major news outlets (US News and World Report, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Newsweek, etc. Watch for subjects of our projects, find the comment boxes, fill'em up. >>RSM |
