When I'm running BOINC, its CPU usage tends to enter a pattern of 1 second spike of 90%, then nothing, then 90%, then nothing, etc. Usually this turns my fan on/off/on/off every few seconds, which is quite annoying and probably not good for the fan either.
I need to shutdown and restart BOINC until it happens to go into a cycle of alternating at a 70/30 ratio, which doesn't come up that often. Sometimes I just get pissed and end up shutting it off altogether. Is there any way to set a max CPU usage limit (NOT the "Use no more than X% of the processor" option)? or will such a feature be included in a future version? |

Visit our Start Here forum FAQ on Threadmaster. That gives a smooth throttle for W2K and up, windows only. Works superb on Laptops and any hotter environment.

Set it to 100%, and the fan will be constant. Or, set it to 50% and normally the throttle frequency will be too fast to affect the fan.
Yes, the throttle is pathetic. But equally, a fan that switches on and off all the time is too sensitive. I find the same thing, very spiky cpu consumption, although my fan does not stop and start. I discovered it was caused by the very thing I use to monitor cpu consumption to wit Windows Task Manager. I played with that a little and found that keeping the refresh rate at low the spikes become much smaller in amplitude. As you increase the refresh rate the spike amplitude goes up. Similar results are seen when using other monitors such a LCD manager etc. Also the more things you monitor the worse it gets.
So not monitoring BOINC and having as little interrupts as possible should even out the load but then I cannot tell if it's really behaving properly, then again in your case your fan will tell you. |

Hello jsobry,
Unless BOINC is set to run at 100%, it will stop running for x seconds in a 10 second period. By default it is set at 60%, to help laptop users. This runs for 3 seconds, then stops for 2 seconds. I run my computer at 100% using My Grid - Device Profile to set my preferences. Lawrence |
