Re: Question about Stats

Those that used to crunch with the old UD agent are even more anxious to get their 'points' converted to credits and see their BOINC standings take a hike up the rankings. The sums are that WCG as a whole will jump to second spot at the BOINCstats sites like AllInOne ;>)

@g00dkn16ht

Sorry, but can't find the Help article anymore. Was possible removed. Historically WCG started with the UD agent and BOINC was bolted on later. In order to have the BOINC work effort match the UD (WCG) points, the factor determined was 7. Now all and every single WCG point will be converted to BOINC credits.

If you had only BOINC credits, My Grid adapts. If you also have points from the retired UD agent, both the My Grid and BOINC Client Project credits will change. Effectively both will match and the confusion will end.

It was planned to happen in late August, but moved now to take place in October. You can assume complete trust that in WCG position everything will be perfectly. In BOINC x-project position those that had UD Agent points will take a gain.

ciao

Re: Question about Stats

Hello g00dkn16ht,
Yes. Originally WCG only ran UD and awarded UD points. Then we added BOINC in 2005. After observing some results, we decided that 1 BOINC point equaled 7 UD points. So we multiplied each BOINC point by 7 and added it to the web site UD points. Now that we have dropped UD, we will soon (I expect very soon) divide the web site points by 7 and just show BOINC points.

Don't be worried by the cross-project sniping about BOINC points. People maintain matrices comparing all projects to ?4? decimal places. Overall the projects cluster into one small pack with just a few outliers.

Re: Question about Stats

Thanks so much for everyone's time. I think I have a good idea what's happening now. This has been a very informative thread for a newbie!

This isn't entirely accurate. While a lot of projects use the standard, unadjusted benchmark, these are the smaller projects. It is the large projects that have suffered most from credit inflation (and a few tiny projects that give silly amounts of credit).

World Community Grid have resisted credit inflation, and will continue to do so.

Now I'm confused! I thought, as stated earlier in this thread, the WCG's credit was inflated by a factor of 7 and that this is what causes the difference from the points listed on this site verses BONIC stats and that's the reason for the soon to be renormalization that will take place here?

Re: Question about Stats

The 7 multiplier was just a constant adjustment to keep two different systems in line.

Credit inflation is more insidious. Here's how it works: you award a certain amount of credit for a certain amount of work. But then, you develop a better program that can do the same work faster. So you start granting more credit. All perfectly logical, but now these inflated credits no longer compare to other projects. You can't undo the change, because you don't know how much each credit is worth.

Re: Question about Stats

Thanks Didactylos, It sounds like there is a huge need for one open standard for granting credits, as has already mentioned here. But then that's one of the core problems in computing in general. Companies like Micro$oft who resist open standards and working to make those standards better but instead just try to make their own. But I'll stay off that soapbox! :-)

World Community Grid have resisted credit inflation, and will continue to do so.

So there is no requirement for consistency between BOINC projects. Any project could award two or three times the points per hour of another project. If true this makes cross project comparison unreliable and total BOINC points irrelevant, since x points earned via WCG might not compare ACCURATELY to x points on EVERY other BOINC project. Is this reality at present?
Just to confirm what may be obvious is that all the earned UD points are not presently displayed in WCG (or BOINC ?) but will be added to the existing WCG (div by 7) points to display the true total BOINC points earned for WCG WU. This total would then be comparable to any other BOINC project, provided that that other project awarded points at the same rate per hour as WCG/UD.

Re: Question about Stats

Hi astrolab,
There is a BOINC-approved method of computing 'cobblestones' and therefore BOINC points. There is no provision for enforcement. It is a purely voluntary guideline. Most projects follow the guideline. A few make adjustments - - in my opinion the adjustments are relatively minor. But obviously, this is just my opinion. So this is a potentially inflammatory subject.

And there is a long history of wild fires breaking out on different forums on this subject.
