I see that my odds of getting a beta job increase if I have a low number of buffer days. Does it matter if I am at 1/2 day or would my chances increase if I am set to .3 or .2 days?
What are the system implications if every user went to .2 days instead of the default of 2.0 days, if any? Does each new project send out a beta usually? Is that the same for the inactive projects such AC@h and HCMD? thanks ![]() |

The default isn't 2 days.
Normally, each new application version is beta tested. |

One comment from the techs was, that the spread of devices to receive a beta job would better be wider than before, but with usually 1000-2000 tasks send out per platform tested (Windows or Linux or Mac), the chance of getting one or more is smallish.... it's a case of a client contacting in the hours that the test batches are distributed.
----------------------------------------For me it took near 3 years of continuous crunching here to get the Beta cheers [edit: omophones]

For me it took near 3 years of continuous crunching here to get the Beta batch as an indication of how long it takes to get the 14 days of CPU time together.... that's why this club is special and requires to stick through thick and thin.cheers Astrolab, don't give up, it's possible to get the batch...!!! I got it within 10 weeks... ![]() |

Now I have it figured out. It does not matter how large your buffer days are. If you happen to pull a job to fill your buffer, no matter whether you have .5 or 2 days, you stand a chance of getting a Beta job. If you get a job, it will run at high priority, being the next job to start on the computer, even if you already have jobs in the buffer. There is that word 'patience' again.

Hey astrolab, don't give up ! It is pretty hard to get but not impossible !
----------------------------------------The best way to get Beta WU's to crunch, pass for intense monitoring of this Beta forum to be aware when new Beta tests will be available. Normally some information is posted by techs about it... In my opinion, if you keep low number to set the buffer, you will have space to adjust to get more Beta WU's when the Beta test become available. Other point is you set all devices profiles in use, to run Beta tests. Some Betas have special requirement (for example: just for Linux users under Ubuuntu, etc). I think that Betas are distributed to reach all kind of users, when possible, and in this way since few months ago Betas WUs are distributed to reach many users with few WU's instead of few users with a lot of WU's to crunch. Some Beta jobs finishing in error, after crunch. You need be prepared to absorb it despite of this bad result... it is a donation time of crunching... The last but not least, if you will be awarded and get Betas WU's to crunch, please return to this forum and share with all users your step by strep Beta experience (for example: Beta XPTO, ran in 1 hour, under an Intel Quad Core 6660, 4GB RAM, 300GB HD, W Vista Ultimate, no erros or issues observed to report, etc ). You will help a lot... Good luck ! Gib@ ![]()

The only betas I ever got were immediately following a new installation on BOINC. I uninstalled/reinstall it and got a unit, then I got the other ones. So I uninstalled/reinstalled 3 more times and got 3 more units, lol.

Post hoc, ergo propter hoc.
This reminds me of a 'fix' I have heard of where the user is supposed to keep the computer turned off for 5 hours as part of the 'fix'. |
