feeding the hungry

While i buy organic produce whenever i can, i do not disagree with GM foods, although i understand the view of those who do. My own opinion is that if we can make a strain of rice/wheat/corn which will better feed the over 850,000 estimated people who are estimated as not getting enough food, or save some of the 25,000 who die every day from starvation then amen to that! Once genes are located the process of GMing is a relatively simple one from what i understand; no huge laboratories splicing the genes and stitching them back together, just a simple relatively benign plant virus for a great number of plants works great. A professor of mine once said that some estimate over 90% of the human genome is viral in nature; does that mean we're genetically modified? wink
what i would rather see eliminated from the food industry is the "copyrighting" of seeds. That would be a thousand times better at helping the world than demanding an end to genetic modification. And i think those self-destroying plants that are made to be sterile at the end of the season so the farmer has to buy more seed is really...really just wrong. What kind of mad scientist thought that one up?

Re: feeding the hungry

Thing is, the target of this projects is not GMing. Classical breed methods with inside knowledge as to which to breed with!

The results are public domain so if a "golden rice" maker is going to do it the GM style, they can do, but not on my plate when it becomes chow time.

The (mad) scientist that's on the payroll of the GM for profit makers thought self-destroying seeds up.... maybe it's for the better it cant survive on it's own, but some will and pollute the natural gene pool.

Re: feeding the hungry

Since the results of this project will be released into the public domain, this will actually make it harder for the GM giants to come up with patented genes.
