Fifty years ago the education level in Walton, Liverpool, was fairly high, so I was nonplussed to hear a woman say:-

Yes, and it was patented on Thursday, 3rd May 1927 by Francis E.J. Wilde of Meadowmere Park, NY.

There is a district, not a million miles from here, where people who do not need artificial respirators will say, with a straight face, "I can't breathe," and others find this acceptable! I wonder if there is another definition for, "breathe?"
