But like most new technology..

The proteins we fold today may also be the key ingredient to the technology needed to kill millions in the wars of the future...

You never know whatchya gonna get..

That is certainly true. You don't know what you will get. Sounds a little like your glass is half empty though.
You might also get longevity free from disease. or you could think that the "drug" companies will make millions from MY volunteer work. imho the volunteer thingy is still worth it. Keep on crunchin here or somewhere else!! smile

p.s. small world. I graduated from a Reno High school!!

Yes,

... and one of us (currently ranking 1540 and still moving steadily up) would be interested to know just what resources need to be committed to the project to stand a chance of moving into the top 20, or even the top 100, say. I wonder if Michael (or anyone else) is prepared to give us a hint?

Re: 15th place and bored

I'm doing just that, but I've been wondering just how many machines I might need if I'm to stand a chance of catching up some of the big boys & girls. However, I've just noticed that it's possible to compare results from individual members on the stats pages so it seems I need to clear out another room and fill it with at least a dozen more machines!

Re: 15th place and bored

THe makers of this grid havent dont the greatest job of promotion of this thing but its still small. There are only 62,000 members yet. Dont losse sight of the point though. Protien folding is basiclly about the shapes of molecules. All the aids and cancer drugs and lipitor exist because of computer modling of molecules. This is a really big deal it really will lead to cures. Im planning to hold out till it reaches 100,000 members and see if it takes off. But till then the organizers need to do more, get on cnn or something.

Michael,

This is not a competition. Its about cooperation and achieving something for the common good. If you are bored by these concepts and require something more to maintain your level of interest, then perhaps you need to seek out some other charitable activity which provides more prizes and glory.

smile Hi Karry

Gandhi once said: "life is full of seemingly inconsequential acts, but it is absolutely essential that we do them."
Crunching is a good example of this, as the rewards to humanity will follow
By the way I lived in Calgary for 19 years at the top of Sarcee Trail
I am back in England now, but I sure miss the friendly Calgarians, the Flames Games, the Calgary Stampede
and most of all the Skiing at Lake Louise
I have sunk a few brews on Electric Avenue over the years
I used to be a member of the Glencoe Club in Mount Pleasant
Also not forgetting the excellent golf courses and trout fishing

Re: 15th place and bored

[ But till then the organizers need to do more, get on cnn or something.]

We are trying to get into the media as much as possible. However, things that seem to attract media are huge milestones, spectacular results, controversy, etc.. look at what celebrities do. Such media spurts make momentary spikes of interest which unfortunately often quickly die out. An very interesting article on this concept is at http://newsroom.ucla.edu/page.asp?RelNum=5686

What often works better are grass roots efforts. If you go out and convince your neighbors, friends, relatives, and work mates that this is a worthy cause and actually help them join (install etc), in the end we get more overall progress. Especially if they in turn do the same. Other things that can help are if you put your own little news stories in club or local organization news letters, it becomes more personal and people may be more willing to get interested and help. The friendly team "wars" / contests often help as long as they do not offend. Perhaps two or more local teams can agree on some prize (of their own funding... like one does in a bet) if they win a points competition by some date or something.
