The reason I was asking about OS was to know whether it was 32 bit Ubuntu or a 64 bit, what exact version of Ubuntu is it (Feisty Fawn, Gutsy Gibbon etc).
Did you install it as a Daemon, start in a login script, or as a standalone application ? Once it is installed, there should be a boincmgr icon somewhere on the desktop that you installed as. Have a look at the Messages tab and let us know what it says there. |

Here at WCG, please, without BOINC. (I didn't even know that there was a distinction ) ![]() Sorry again, I misread Sekarob's latest response. So, yes, I need help with Boinc to contribute via WCG. So, I do use Ubuntu 8.04. As is mentioned before, I installed the Boinc Manager version 5.10.45 via the Ubuntu packet manager. The trouble is that I don't know where to get the Boinc client and how to connect it to the manager. I tried to get the client and connect it to the manager following [url=http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/reg/ms/viewThankYouAll.do?platformPick=linux]those instructions[//url], but that way I got the Boinc Manager 6.2.14, which is a development version and is not yet working properly. It did offer me a way to connect to projects, but the menue that pooped up lacks a way to scroll between projects, so none of the projects I want to connect to is actually available. I could show you if there were a way to upload screenshots. I went back to 5.10.45 and tried to connect to 'localhost' or 'localhost (5.10.45)', but I always got an reply that the manger cannot connect to a client. So I'd like to know how to use my currecnct Boinc manager to connect to projects. Thanks in advance. |

It is a long time since I used BOINC on Linux but when you run boincmgr for the first time, it should ask you to attach to a project.
You can always try tools -> attach to project. The project URL is http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ |

I installed the 5.45.10 via the Ubuntu repository, the 6.2.14 from berkely.edu (or so claims the entry in the download manager of Firefox). The messages tab of the older manager is empty, whereas the messages tab of the development version says Mo 04 Aug 2008 18:37:51 CEST||Starting BOINC client version 6.2.14 for i686-pc-linux-gnu Mo 04 Aug 2008 18:37:51 CEST||This a development version of BOINC and may not function properly Mo 04 Aug 2008 18:37:51 CEST||log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops Mo 04 Aug 2008 18:37:51 CEST||Libraries: libcurl/7.18.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8g zlib/1.2.3.3 c-ares/1.5.1 Mo 04 Aug 2008 18:37:51 CEST||Data directory: /home/ralf/Software/BOINC Mo 04 Aug 2008 18:37:51 CEST||Processor: 2 AuthenticAMD AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ [Family 15 Model 67 Stepping 3] Mo 04 Aug 2008 18:37:51 CEST||Processor features: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 ht syscall nx mmxext fxsr_opt rdtscp lm 3dnowext 3dnow pni cx16 lahf_lm cmp_legacy svm extapic cr8_legacy ts fid vid ttp tm stc Mo 04 Aug 2008 18:37:51 CEST||OS: Linux: 2.6.24-19-generic Mo 04 Aug 2008 18:37:51 CEST||Memory: 1.86 GB physical, 4.66 GB virtual Mo 04 Aug 2008 18:37:51 CEST||Disk: 110.16 GB total, 95.08 GB free Mo 04 Aug 2008 18:37:51 CEST||Local time is UTC +2 hours Mo 04 Aug 2008 18:37:51 CEST||No coprocessors Mo 04 Aug 2008 18:37:51 CEST||No general preferences found - using BOINC defaults Mo 04 Aug 2008 18:37:51 CEST||Preferences limit memory usage when active to 949.90MB Mo 04 Aug 2008 18:37:51 CEST||Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 1709.82MB Mo 04 Aug 2008 18:37:51 CEST||Preferences limit disk usage to 9.31GB Mo 04 Aug 2008 18:37:51 CEST||This computer is not attached to any projects Mo 04 Aug 2008 18:37:51 CEST||Visit http://boinc.berkeley.edu for instructions - |

hmmm, you can only run 1 BOINC version at the time, which explains why 5.10.45 is not connected!!!!!! Exit the 5.10.45 BOINCmgr and attach project via the tools menu to 6.2.14. There should be a box to just type the address that stares gave if the drop down list is unavailable. After it should ask for your member name / password.

I am sorry that I tried the patience of the both of you, but at least it works now. |
