Okay....you're not seeing an indication that it's malware and you're not browsing the net there, that leaves the problem to the Dark Lord's bloatware. That is (presuming you use auto update), you load the basic image, all is fine, auto update comes along and see all these patches that it needs and installs those, now you have the problem. Reimage, disable the auto install on auto update so you can control the patches installed. You'll find the one/batch that causes the trouble in time....if you really want to....or just stop auto update on that one.

...You are the most active captain on the grid... I appreciate the sentiment but doubt it's accuracy, unless you're mean at 10:30 PM at night! ![]() |

OK, now I feel stupid.
---------------------------------------- I think I found it. I noticed on that machine task manager/processes was not set on that machine to "show all users" (stupid Dataman). When I set it to show all, it was easy to see that it was a svchost.exe that was using the CPU. TUT was showing it too but I guess I didn't notice. I shut it down and renamed the file. Both cores are now running at 48-49%.HP machines come with "HP Total Care". While this may be useful for some, it's crap to me so I always uninstall it when configuring the machine to crunch. This .exe apparently is some residual piece that didn't go away. I think (not confirmed) that it was a runaway program trying to do a backup (or something to do with a backup) but it didn't appear to actually be backing up anything; just eating CPU cycles. As long as there is not some other program that puts it back, I think I have it resolved. Unanswered questions are why it took 6-7 weeks for the program to start runnng. Why it is not happing to the 4 other HP machines where I also unistalled "HP Total Care". Or ... I may be totally wrong ... but the machine is running OK for now. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Dataman at Aug 1, 2008 7:07:59 PM] |

Why not switch to another research project? I abandoned FAAH when I was getting weird run times and will switch back in a fortnight once those crazy long work units run out. |

When it's done updating the points. Also.. I have quite a few FAAH queued. Going to crunch them since I don't want to just cancel. I could not agree with Jonathan more. If you get a wu you don't want to run, kill it. Someone else will get it and love to run it. Move to stable projects 'til they get it fixed. You are not an employee of WCG, Vincent. They work for you. With out you (everyone), they are just an idle data center. ![]() ![]() |

Would that be today?
----------------------------------------http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...amp;lastpage=yes#lastpost Nice lead time on that announcement WCG. Notice how they announce in 'read only' threads. C2D is still running on both cylinders. Rebooted a couple of times just to test it.![]() |
