Hey there, I am doing a new work unit faah5003_1k6c_1jld_00_0
it's been going for 8 hours and it hasn't made it past 13%.
Can you tell us about this work unit?
what's it for?
Thanks.

Yeah - noticed the same thing for the work unit I got - 9 hours to do 25% - normally it is done between 6-10 hours. Now nearing 65% after 21 hours.

sad Re: this is a really long work unit

I'm happy to hear I'm not the only one. I'm a noob to FAAH so I didn't know what to expect. I have four processes running a long time, the worst is 1 day, 13 hours at 52%

Hope this isn't normal.

Re: this is a really long work unit

Guys,

don't know what hardware you are running, but please visit the My Grid > Result Status page and click on the result Work Unit name to see the quorum. If the other result was returned with Pending Validation, look at the run time to get an idea. If they report error, consider to suspend the job and start next and keep an eye out if aborting is appropriate.

The current project average run time you find in the graph link in my signature below or on the project statistics page for FAAH (Take last day run time divided by result to get an approximation).

Thanks for the response. For the record, my machines are both Pentium 4's with HT. Up till now the usual times have been around 12 to 17 hours.

The first of my problem children has just reported after just under 41 hours:
https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/devi...us.do?workunitId=34940548

None of the 4 pieces of work in question on my machines has been reported yet by the other person.

I'm letting the other 3 run in the hopes of not wasting time on work already done.

Hope this adds helpful information. - Regards!

EDIT: Just noticed that the "number of generations" was set to 27000 for the above work. The others I've returned were all set to 10000.
https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/devi...Log.do?resultId=104760636
Could this account for the extreme time? I don't really know anything thats really happening in this software, but somehow that makes sense if its a number of loops.
Thanks again.

Re: this is a really long work unit

Is your client set to use 1 or 2 processors? With P4 HT, 1 is virtual, thus you really get extended run times. For a number of reasons the recommended profile setting is 1 processor to use only the physical.

To change, go to My Grid > Device Manager > profile that is attached to your client, e.g. Default, take Custom radio button and set:

On multiprocessors, at most use: 1 processors

and Save

In BOINCmgr, go to Projects tab, select WCG and hit Update in left margin. That will transfer the profile change and run a new benchmark.

Of course if it is already on 1, thoroughly ignore foregoing.

ciao

Re: this is a really long work unit

Work now completed

Run time 33.50 hours
Claimed credit: 388 points

Wow - what a whopper - never seen my computer claim more than 150 before.

All current tasks now have completely skewed estimated time - yes I know it will eventually get back to normal.

Re: this is a really long work unit

I hope that the long run time was also incurred by the partner in quorum as a claim for near 400 is quite exceptional. Had a situation myself some time ago that caused 1 client to run WCG jobs much slower because of a math program that was running on the side.

Anyway, the July 27 midday stats do not indicate that the very long jobs are very prolific. The points per hour do show an exceptional jump. 75 is normal, but today 81.45 average, so there is indication of something hard being chewed.

note to self: prepare to convert history to show credits instead of points.

Re: this is a really long work unit

I also have a bunch of FAAH that are taking 5x more CPU time than "normal". No worries though, the first few have validated successfully and I have no reason to suspect the others will be any different. It's just unusual seeing 15+ hour run times and 400+ point claims...lol! biggrin
