Re: wcg_hcc1_img_6.06 etc trying to phone home?

The actual split is more like 90/9 between cpus. That's probably system work on one cpu and BOINC on the other. Either way, BOINC no longer functions the way it used to. Both Windows task manager and MBM5 show heavy utilization on one cpu only and my WCG settings have not changed.

Perhaps your preferences limit you to a single core. Perhaps your preferences limit memory use, so you can only run one task at once. Either way, we need to know what your active preferences are. Please will you post the startup messages from the Messages tab of BOINC Manager? Thank you.

Okay, bull by horns:

post content of 2 files found in the BOINC datadir (location indicated in startup message log of BOINC):

global_prefs.xml
global_prefs_override.xml

check in the BOINCmgr, Advanced menu > Preferences under the processor tab how many processors are indicated at bottom. For BOINC 5.10 it should be 2. For BOINC 6 it's an percentage indication, which obviously should be 100.

In TaskManager (Ctlr-Shift-Esc keys combined), how many WCGxxxxxxx processes do you see?

Re: wcg_hcc1_img_6.06 etc trying to phone home?

Great!
Tonight I caught one of those Rice WUs which try to surf the internet instead of computing seriously. And I could get two IP addresses that it was interested with.

The first time it tried to contact 64.4.21.91 which seems to be an address in the MS world.

After restarting Boinc (since allowing the access did not unlock the situation) it tried again but this time the address was 129.33.89.133 which is in the WCG world. After allowing it again the WU finished in error with a 1 second runtime.

Looking at the error report from the Results status page it appears that the WU got an error from the beginning and that it is some debugging routine that tries internet accesses to MS and eventually Berkeley too.

The name of the WU is R00057_1b242e8386cefbf4293b6bcee6090096_00_29--, using version 6.17 of the Rice application.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: wcg_hcc1_img_6.06 etc trying to phone home?

Well! Now that the stats update is finished I can post some more information about the failure described in the previous post.

1. For information only, because I think that any serious error in a Rice WU might cause the internet problem, the original error was
- exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005)

2. Then a thing called "BOINC Windows Runtime Debugger Version 6.1.14" starts, and

3. Its Symbol Search Path, instead of containing local paths information only, contains references to
- h ttp://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols;srv
- h ttp://boinc.berkeley.edu/symstore
- something-www.worldcommunitygrid.org;srv
(space inserted in http above to de-activate these links here).

It looks like some code used during the test periods has been left in production WUs, but I may be misinterpreting all that stuff.

Let's wait for feedback from the techs. Jean.

"the address was 129.33.89.133 " looks like the same IP at one of the phone-home moments. Try a WhoIs on it.

Re: wcg_hcc1_img_6.06 etc trying to phone home?

No checking needed: 129.33.89.133 is WCG and 129.33.89.134 is the WCG secure IP, so if there is phone home, it's where one would expect the RICE/BOINC to call into reporting a bad result. WhoIs would show it within a long IP range registered to IBM, which is where WCG is run from.

As for your CPU use, the override file (local pref) has a limitation of cores set at 16, and website prefs at 2, so if BOINC is not running 2 jobs simultaneous each using 1, there's your computer settings to consider, but I for now think it's a misunderstanding. In TaskManager you should see 2 processes taking CPU time starting with wcg_xxxx_xxxxxxxxxxx. Each when at max near 50% of total (equals 100% per core). Your global and local prefs show to use <cpu_usage_limit>100.0</cpu_usage_limit> i.e. 100%

<max_cpus>16</max_cpus>

When Didactylos asked for your startup message log, in there is listed how many processors (cores) allowed to be used. ~Similar to this:

7/22/2008 5:06:04 PM||Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5600 @ 1.80GHz
