confused WCG and a need to get on MySpace. An argument why!

WCG is suffering from a major issue!

You guys need to get the word out about what you do here. Word of mouth can only go so far. Since it seems SETI might be going away soon you have a large group of people who may be looking to do something else. A cheap to free answer should be a presence on MySpace. MySpace could help us that are long term members of the WCG world to explain and showcase what you do. Also would be a place to help people keep up with what you are doing. Also would add a way to communicate with WCG and help all of us feel closer to the WCG process. I do not understand how only some 400 thousand world wide are part of WCG. You should have millions of computers and people helping out! Just an idea! Also I would love to be able to share WCG on my MySpace page!

Thank You For Your Time,

Re: WCG and a need to get on MySpace. An argument why!

Personal (i.e. not official WCG's) opinion:

If SETI@Home had to pull the plug (which is not the fact, to my knowledge) I think that
- a majority of participants would know already where they want to go, either personally or from their team
- a majority of the others would rather look at specialized sites like BoincStats and many others, or at sites like Wikipedia to find their way
- those of the remaining subset who would search on "World Community Grid" or WCG in MySpace would be very disappointed by what they would find and in any case would not have a chance to come here as a result.

That being said, have fun on MySpace if you like that. Jean.

I think you guys are missing out on an advertising opportunity! Or should I say recruiting opportunity.

I believe others have tried in the past with social networking sites and WCG - with little success.

The MySpace generation doesn't seem that interested in computational humanitarianism. Please, prove me wrong!

Cyberia,

We implemented certain features on our website such as the XML stats exports: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=web#329 and the verification code mechanism: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=profile#335 to give the members the ability to come up with new and interesting applications elsewhere (such as a MySpace application).

I would encourage you and other members to team up and give it a try to see what you can do. I think that if someone gets it started you might find some other folks willing to help you.

Let us know how it goes,
Kevin

Re: WCG and a need to get on MySpace. An argument why!

Hi,

I haven't been on WCG in a while and happened to run into this post. Yes, I was one of the individuals who tried to recruit on Myspace and still do.

The problem with Myspace is that it's about 'GENERATION ME' meaning it's all about ME...ME..ME! I have had some limited luck relating to such individuals, but usually they fail to see how it can benefit themselves, someone they love know or care about!

It seems exciting at first, the idea of recruiting..until you run into enough people that don't care then you wear down and become an old dog.

I find that Myspace is full of aliens from another generation. SETI should have looked there... alien 2

I *do* have a myspace page.

Grid computing is a whole different area from social networking. alien 2

The 'pop' culture 'Generation ME' on Myspace are aliens..lol. You also have to watch out for some Christians who think anyone that has a disease like HIV has either sinned or inherented someone else's sin. To me, that sounds like a cough out excuse not to help. Thankfully, some Christians believe in taking responsibility and helping out their fellow humans!

I don't think most people on Myspace would help S.E.T.I as it's not very likely to coincide with any of their own personal desires, want, needs or agenda's. Infact most normal people find the prospect of E.T finding us scary!

it is a good idea. there are all kinds of people on myspace so it is impossible to generalize about all of them.
