Re: more questions about WCG selection algorythems

So how does this get undone?... I suspect over time with results being returned one gets out of this scenario?

First thing, set your extra work buffer back to a more appropriate setting. Here at WCG, with a 0.5-day extra work buffer you should never be without work. You may choose a little more if you want to be very careful, but remember that you will probably never get a beta WU if you return your normal ones in more than one day after the distribution time.

Next, wait for your buffer to empty... Fortunately it probably does not contain really 10 days of waiting WUs yet (due to internal details of Boinc algorithms). smile

Wish there were a nice, concise, rules of the road (things to consider) if you will... on possible ramifications on all this.

It is normal that you want to understand how everything works in WCG. Therefore you should take some time to read through the many topics of the "Start Here" forum. Most questions will find their answer there, and probably many that you have not even considered asking yet. Next you will still be welcome here if there are still some points to clarify.

Another way to learn is to set your client to one of the standard work profiles and watch it work during one or two weeks without changing any setting. Then make small adjustments one by one if the global performance is very different from what you wish. Boinc is rather good at learning how your machine works and how you use it, but it takes time to learn it. Therefore if you change settings constantly it will take it longer to figure things out.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: more questions about WCG selection algorythems

Hmmmm..... so... is there a way to prevent the client from requesting work no earlier than say 3 minutes from the termination point of the WU being worked on?

This way I would have it the shortest amount of time... considering we are penalized for having WU's that are not returned as soon as possible... ?

I find where I can set my network (via the client) to inspect say about every 8-9) seconds... so the return could be sent up almost as soon as it ends and worst case is that it takes about 12 seconds go get there from the completion time.

So if you are identified as being reliable; then the objective should be to have the "hot potato" WU on one's que only when it's being worked on... and to do that effeciently... one would require a way to have it determine when the WU was about to complete and make the request for a new WU then and only then.

So... is there a way to say when a WU has 3 mins or less to complte get another WU?

You're going from one extreme to the other. Just leave the connects at default and you're hot enough to be considered a tomali.

Re: more questions about WCG selection algorythems

Barney,
There is something that you must realize which is that there is no magic here: if you crunch, say, 1500 credits a day, you will get 1500 credits a day in average once the pipe has been filled in. That may fluctuate a little depending on the partners who got the same WUs as you or how much you play with your settings, but at the end that will not change anything to the net result.

The only thing you can do on your side is if you notice that your machine is not as efficient** with one project as with the others you might decide to de-select that project.

Cheers. Jean.

** In terms of credits per hour. But this is painful to evaluate since you must gather results on a long enough period to have meaningful and balanced figures. The simplest is to leave things go their way. smile

Re: more questions about WCG selection algorythems

Barney, in all this discussion, it seems the main purpose of the work buffer has been overlooked. It will help you survive brief network outages, or occasional server problems at WCG's end.

For this purpose, about half a day is plenty of buffer, and it won't slow down the prompt turn-around of work.

It's a tradeoff. Pick a number that suits you. The default is fine for nearly all situations.
