confused Perm Burn on LCD Monitor + More..

--- Note: I have NOT tried/used the 'latest' version of BOINC (if there even is one) ----

Yep, just noticed it today i duno why it didn't catch my eye before but it's now bad enough that i can nearly read the burned in words off the screen. It's so blunt that w/a light background i could nearly take a photo of it. 0 Question as to the cause, i can tell just by the burned in borders.

- This monitor shuts off too @ no more than an hour.

This has been a concern of many users for quite a while. I guess we can only make assumptions based on the lack of reaction & response.

Also: i've been slowly removing BOINC from a multitude of machines, not because of this ^ problem (yet) but because i just don't see how anyone can honestly say this program (the SS) does not hog (the) video (card) to the point of crashing the desktop.

.. I really could care less about 'blaming video drivers' or the card either. Don't bother.

I've done ~10+ years of CPU in ~1 year (w/BOINC) and i can honestly say that the only machines i've seen NOT crash are ones with higher end (not-onboard) video cards.

If the machine (which is most i put BOINC on) has an onboard video card it's literally only a matter of time (<1w) before you have to struggle to exit the SS or force/end task on it. Often it takes a ctrl-alt-del, etc.. etc..

Much like the UD community that i left (by force) w/20+ cpu. I'm not seeing improvements to the client.

We can mull over the 'don't use it as a screen saver' & 'it's slower' approach but from an IT standpoint, i do not want another icon in the tray 24/7. Nor do i want users to be messing with it... at all.

Also from a technician/dev standpoint, these (simple really) problems are just not acceptable anymore.

I don't know quite how many machines i have left w/BOINC running but i can say there won't be more than 2-3 in the very near future & i may end up with just one.

Re: Perm Burn on LCD Monitor + More..

BeGodlike, LCD monitors do not suffer from burn-in. The technology simply doesn't make the phenomenon possible.

But LCDs do suffer from something called "image persistence". Unlike burn-in, this is not permanent. Simply setting your display to go to a blank screen after an interval will remove the problem. This setting is available in the BOINC screensaver options.

Re: Perm Burn on LCD Monitor + More..

Assuming this article on the topic is correct:

http://compreviews.about.com/od/monitors/a/LCDBurnIn.htm

..The cause is still the same & the concern is still the same.

I will attempt a couple of the methods listed - what i will say i re-booted this machine just a few hours ago & have also shut the monitor off/on a few times today in an attempt to rid of the 'image persistence'

Oh and 'blank screen' doesn't tell me if the computer is running, or even on.

Re: Perm Burn on LCD Monitor + More..

Hello BeGodlike,
When you first install BOINC 5, it asks if you want it to run as a service or not. Running as a service does not install an icon in the tray or a screen saver. Running it in the tray is for users who want to look at what is going on, but it is not necessary since it is always possible to run the BOINC Manager to find out what the service is doing. BOINC 6 will always install as a service on Vista.

It sounds as though you chose the installation option that did everything you did not want it to do. Why not install as a service on one machine and see if you don't like that better?

IIRC if you install it as a service, and you want it to run just as the screen saver, w/out tray icon, you have to configure it to interact w/desktop (via services manager) & deal with that whole thing.

I also recall it (boinc.exe) has to run in the bg at all times & cannot run nor be installed 'just' as a screen saver.

But you don't want to use the screensaver. With a service installation, you can use any screensaver you like (pick one that uses few computing resources.

I never said i 'don't' want to use the screen saver. What i'm saying is, the current screen saver is (still) unacceptable for multiple reasons, varying from crashes to static items.

As far as boinc is concerned... No more tray icons. No more running in the background/No more running as a service.

All people want is a non-intrusive non-PITA method of running boinc as just a screen saver.

I'm not here to 'dumb down' what this should look & function like. The non-PITA standard of what people are asking for is (still) obvious.

This application should be fully capable of installing as just a screen saver w/out running in the background, w/out a tray icon & w/out screen/video crashes.

The desperate need to trash the current screen saver setup & general running (& installation) functionality of boinc has turned away potential users countless times.

Do not insult me with acting as if i speak of non-existent problems.

There is still no question that the screen saver has been dead-left behind and from what i can tell has never really been updated or changed at all.

There is also no question as the repercussions of leaving it the way it's been, ranging from obvious burn potential to the unquestionable crashes that happen when running as a screen saver on oem equipped machines.
