Re: DANGER New MS Updates

Scribe, thanks for sharing.

Plz see also the ongoing Windows Update thread in Chat Room http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/printpost?post=174304. KB 952709 also mentions ZA. I don't have that FW (had), and the install dismally fails, so now digging if there are some ZA remnants on my Vista system. Till now, 4 attempts, the install thoroughly bumbs.

ciao

Re: DANGER New MS Updates

Interesting: This MS fix was in fact part of a coordinated effort to patch the 16 main internet DNS servers on multiple OSses, not only windows, to stop a DNS poisoning hole (redirect of traffic to hacker sites) that had existed on the Internet for 6 months and ZA being one of few caught with their pants down.... maybe they're not in the circle of trust ;>)

that had existed on the Internet for 6 months;>)

Well no, it has always existed but was found out about 6 months ago and being worked on by Microsoft, Sun, Cisco and "many others" since then.

Re: DANGER New MS Updates

Some readers have contacted the BBC saying that applying Microsoft patch had caused problems with their PC. However, a Microsoft spokesman said its call centre staff had not received any calls about such problems.
Are there still people calling MS Call Center when they have problems with MS patches? My understanding was that it is unlikely that it ever helps anybody. So, not receiving any call does not prove anything. smile

Beside this I am still waiting for an explanation that ZA has anything to do with this DNS flaw, nor that being obliged to lower the level of protection by some "clever" MS patch is putting the blame on ZA's side. For me it's in the same kind of cleverness as software providers who ask users to de-activate their antivirus for installing their products (which I never do, obviously, and the things install without trouble).

I am probably missing something obvious that somebody will kindly explain for me.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: DANGER New MS Updates

Latest whirl on the wheel is that "ZA hooks in undocumented ways into the OS, all are doing it" the ZA spokeswoman said. Asked why only ZA has trouble "others hook in different ways" :O Translation my side: Everyone does it maybe smarter than ZA does, or? ZA is working on patch is the word.
