Forum Support for Other Operating Systems

I have recently set up BOINC-WCG on two non-Windows systems. A Mac and a Ubuntu (Linux). I've discovered this:
-- There are issues very specific to installations and operation on those two platforms; and,
-- This forum has no "go to" location to find help with those issues.

BOINC and WCG have installations available for OS's besides the ubiquitous Windows. And those OS installations work extremely well. With the diminishing dominance of Windows in today's marketplace, I would think this forum could do a better job of supporting the other platforms for which the software is available.

For example, what about
-- Setting up a separate section under "Support" for each of the non-Windows variants of the software, or
-- At least give us Sticky posts under "BOINC Agent Support" [one Sticky for each of the variants] with special installation instructions and the like.

These simple format enhancements could go long way in bringing more participation to the grid.

This is a possibility for when the UD forum is retired.

Re: Forum Support for Other Operating Systems

Honestly I don't know, but what happens if you click from a Mac machine on this link: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/reg/ms/viewDownloadAgain.do .... the /ms/ part does not seem to bode well. sad
When you get there, you'll find below the download button an instruction link. Does that bring up install instructions?

The BOINC FAQ Service has a whole series of install instruction in the How To section 7. Just go http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/search.php and type Install in the search box. There one for MAC and several flavours of Linux:

http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?view=...3733b3fa3ab85a4269b2c461a

As for stickies, they are a feature as part of a forum software upgrade plan. To me it's "I'll see it when I see it" as the last time is was projected to be rolled out before middle of this year and seen no indication for website update build 22 to include this overdue item either.

Separate forums for specific OSses are not scheduled for all I know and whilst the Apple share is growing in dollars-spend terms, it's not that enormous in machine counts. Linux I think has a much greater representation. sad

On my Ubuntu system here, your link takes me back to the Linux download page, and there is a link to installation instructions. But they're the Windows install instructions, confusing and only marginally helpful for Linux people.

The BOINC FAQ for Linux is a joke! If a seeker happens to find it at all, it says nothing that's helpful.

Again, there might be stuff out there, but everything I found was only more confusing and definitely not helpful. I got a lot more help by posting my Linux-specific questions here in the Support / BOINC Agent Support folder. But there they get buried in the pile after a while.

You may be skillful at searching for buried treasure. But like it or not, most people aren't. If the intuitive organization of the forum doesn't make it easy for them to find what they're looking for, they'll just leave -- or, ask their redundant questions all over again.

Re: Forum Support for Other Operating Systems

Well, it's volunteer writing, so roll up the sleeves and make us a few that are not a joke wink. Several people have added to the Official BOINC wiki: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_on_Linux. This one is for Debian and Fedora. The Ubuntu really only needs a few lines. Even I was able to do it with that little on Hardy Heron and pull the latest from the Synaptic repository.... and after all, don't Linux users not revel in discovery and complicated command line instructions?

The start here forum has an FAQ on navigation and search. Putting multiple words in quotes like "multiple words in quotes" will narrow a search down pretty exact. Just try it with the bolded text and you get the result presto pronto:

The /ms/ is a bit of legacy code. It was originally used for all portions of the site under 'Member Service' which is now called 'My Grid'. It has nothing to do with Microsoft.

You should have been able to get to this page:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/reg/ms/viewThankYouAll.do?platformPick=linux

Admittedly this page is designed for the command line installation rather then a GUI installation (assumption of no interaction of the manager).

This page also doesn't include information about how to configure Linux to automatically start the agent. Some links to information about this are available here:

biggrin Re: Forum Support for Other Operating Systems

Ah, forgot all about that Start Here forum post listing a number of install instruction sets:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=4925

The Mac one looks nice compared to anything seen anywhere else so far.

Re: Forum Support for Other Operating Systems

The BOINC FAQ for Linux is a joke! If a seeker happens to find it at all, it says nothing that's helpful.

The trouble with writing one correctly that works on all Linux distros is troublesome as it varies on the different distros on how to do things. The general FAQ should work, if you think it's a joke complain at the BOINC developer who wrote it, as I copied it word for word from the BOINC web site at the time. smile

But I don't mind rewriting it if someone tells me what is wrong with it. I don't use Linux myself, so I haven't a clue on what part of it is the joke. If you think you can do better, write it and email it to me. My email address can be found under the About menu of the BFS.
