Son has lost/forgotten one of his passwords to a site and wishes to change it. This password is one of these that have been saved by explorer which provides it when he wishes to access the site, as a string of ***** of course.
----------------------------------------He has googled the WEB and discovered a number of downloads that claim to list all the passwords but is reluctant to use any without some endorsement from anyone who knows about them.....any comments out there? Pity, as Firefox can actually show the passwords behind the **** AFTER entering a master password! They are stored in a rather secure way, so little risk on his password-less system for those to get lost.
----------------------------------------Also I Use "Secure Login" addon to manage which sites are actually allowed to store passwords/user ID/Form Info. Finally, with the mentioned master password of Firefox, it is not possible to just click and proceed to log in anywhere until the MPW has been entered, for the session and have a Master Password Timeout addon to ensure that after absence, the MPW kicks back in again as hurdle. Now, thoughts on PW recovery software. I've read of those but never needed to test so dont have an opinion on them, to include potential concern of them having a 'calling home' feature sending all he has to a repository! BTW, does that site not have an email password recovery page?

Hi Scribe, I've used tools from nirsoft several times and always found them to be top quality (for freeware tools) and they do exactly what's advertised 'on the box'. Check out their pw recovery tool for IE: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/internet_explorer_password.html Cheers, Sean |

IE7 password recovery brings up many pages of results, but no official Microsoft listing. My suggestion is to pick a reputable looking one, then check for comments on C-net and/or Google. If it has been around for a while without derogatory comments, it is worth a try.

Whoa, Asterix Logger.... my e-bank shows a virtual scrambled numerical keyboard to prevent exactly that.... scary stuff.
----------------------------------------Apparently one of the AV vendors has implemented such a feature popping up whenever a browser-screen appears needing ID/password/passcode to stop this. Son needs update as one day they will empty his pay-pal account, infiltrate the my-space and facebook profiles and go arunning with the social security number. Costs more than a call to the support centre ;-|

I do see that some AV vendors flag it as a false positive - but if you have other opinions on it then please let us know. Scribe - have you noticed any unusual behaviour since using the tool? Thanks, Sean [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 4, 2008 7:31:43 PM] |
