Got this vexing problem on Vista HP-SP1, quad core:
----------------------------------------Trackman Ball Logitech wireless mouse & keyboard, latest drivers and Setpoint 4.6 bloatware. Long as mouse cursor is moved everything on display updates near real time (BOINC Task grid view, Science Graphics, Process Explorer, you name it). E.g. the scrolling science info in Help Cure Cancer graphics, left bottom, smoothly rolls, whilst moving mouse. Stop mouse use and everything gets jerky and seems to update only once per second. The BOINC grid view tends to only update every few seconds. BOINC 5.10.45 in single user mode (not as service). Absolutely everything is up to date in display, mouse, keyboard and whatnot drivers. Is this a Vista feature that can be set or is this a "Bill bug"? thanks for any "pointers" [Edit: SP1 installed too, lloyd_mcse]

Perhaps you already tried this but here goes anyway. Pull up process or task manager. Snooze BOINC. See if you can recreate the jerkiness without BOINC running. If so, you may be able to pinpoint if the jerkiness is processor bound. If it is not processor bound, it could be a graphics conflict, but I doubt that if it runs smoothly under load.

Are you running SP1? My stepdad had an issue with a cursor prior to installing SP1

So here goes after an AFB for a fortnight:
----------------------------------------Though all drivers were thought to be up to snuff, the application control panel was showing an odd ancient "Video NVidia 158.19" application whilst the Desktop Control applet said 175.16. Uninstalled the Video app which solicited Vista (SP1) to pull the NVidia default drivers from disk. Briefly thought things were better, but no, same stutter in the images and the BOINC advanced tasks view showing intermittent counter updates with a parked mouse.... Went and Pulled NVidia 175.19, no improvement. Moving mouse all shows smooth display, stopping mouse all going back to stutter.... Decided to play some streaming video and discovered that uninstalling the Display drivers also had done away with the audio, so pulled the Realtek 1.96 latest, booted and.... booting went amazingly fast, the unstoppable Vista tune was back and all is well now. Since Realtek seems to always have some impact on the NIC functioning, and someone suggesting the RPC used by e.g. BOINC was being affected, it probably was this (yeah right, it was just a side effect). Smoothness all around (Really?).... 30 minutes later: Same as before. The video and BOINC graphics stutter is back when mouse is stationary.... are there any buffer saturations somewhere? But then, Eureka found the root cause (maybe).... more later as I'm about to harass (humbly) the maker of that software on it's forum to see if there is corroboration for the finding. Could always be that that is affected by yet another piece of the puzzle on that marvel of operating system called Vista.
