Hi all
My teenage son has a dual core PC running an nVidia 7300 graphics card and BOINC. He has been routinely pausing BOINC when using the PC as his computer slows to a crawl when it is running. I've personally observed clicking a link in a browser... 10 seconds passes... pause BOINC... the link loads instantly. I've also seen significant stutter in graphics intensive games - but again only when BOINC is running! Never really dug into this until yesterday when I had the time to look for optional downloads in Windows Update - lo and behold the nVidia 7300 had a driver that was released > 6 months ago. After making a sacrifice to a bronze idol I installed the update... and the PC has never been snappier regardless of whether BOINC is running or not. Bizarre, but just wanted to post this to pre-empt other "why does my PC run so slow with BOINC" posts. Cheers Adrian |

Thanks for that Adrian,
----------------------------------------It's always a good idea to talk to your idol and than check the Video Card makers website once in a while for new drivers. I've got that brand in all machines and was on 169.25, but now it seems 175.16 is the new WHQL, so ran the check for the 7400 and yes, it wants to install that. cheers PS: Note the bolded. That is what BOINC uses for graphics! * WHQL Certified for Windows XP * Supports GeForce 6, 7, 8, and 9 series GPUs including these newly released GPUs: o GeForce 9800 GX2 o GeForce 9800 GTX o GeForce 9600 GT o GeForce 9600 GSO o GeForce 8300 o GeForce 8200/ nForce 730a o GeForce 8100/ nForce 720a * Supports single GPU and NVIDIA SLI⢠technology* on DirectX 9 and OpenGL. * Adds new PureVideo HD features for GeForce 9800 GX2, 9800 GTX, 9600 GT, and 9600 GSO: o Dynamic Contrast Enhancement o Dynamic Blue, Green & Skin Tone Enhancements o Dual-Stream Decode Acceleration** * Improved performance on many DirectX 9 and OpenGL applications. * GPU overclocking and temperature monitoring is available by installing NVIDIA System Tools software. * Numerous game and application compatibility fixes. Please read the release notes for more information on product support, features, driver fixes and known compatibility issues.

One addition to all of this.
----------------------------------------The question lingering on my mind is if the card is really a crad, not a chipset embedded on the motherboard? Can easily be checked at the back where the monitor is attached, does it connect to an outlet that's coming from the motherboard, or on something that's on a backplate (with a screw at the top)? Furthermore, if you never installed drivers for the video card, it's well possible it was running with the ones that Windows installed by default. These drivers are never as good as the drivers from the manufacturer. They provide basic functions and most of the times don't even give full OpenGL support. Updating video card drivers through Windows Update is a so so in my book. Waiting for drivers to be updated to WHQL status (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) takes a long time, these drivers are usually outdated as it takes a good 3 to 4 months for Microsoft to test these drivers (and it costs the manufacturers a lot of money to have them tested by Microsoft, so they won't do it every month!). At this moment the latest drivers at nVidia and those at Windows may be the same, but it's always a good idea to check through the nVidia site for updated drivers. So Bookmark the link I gave and check in once a month for updated drivers.

Hi,
Yes, it is really a card. I did have a real nVidia driver before - obviously just a very old one. Should have mentioned that BOINC graphics are never turned on - even as a screensaver - but the performance impact was still significant. Cheers Adrian |
